Mandala Ou Resort, Nong Kiaw, Northern Laos

Standard

IMG_1965 IMG_1997

IMG_3026 IMG_3027

Recently opened around 12 months ago, Mandala Ou Resort is the prettiest and most luxurious accommodation in Nong Kiaw. It also boasts Nong Kiaw’s only pool, which is lovely, especially if travelling with a group, but not essential in the cooler temperatures. The pool is framed by an attractive bar area, making for a very welcoming, central spot to relax.

IMG_1767_2IMG_1773_2
Nic and Kenny run a smooth and efficient ship. Nic has designed some beautiful individual villas that all have either a gorgeous balcony with a stunning view of the river or a garden setting with an upstairs studio area. The textiles and decorating in the rooms are beautifully chosen.

IMG_2343 IMG_2119

Hot water to the shower is provided by an efficient small electric heater. Tea and coffee making facilities are also available.

IMG_2020IMG_2031
The restaurant has a great view out over the river and there are hammocks to relax in.

IMG_1963 IMG_1958IMG_1768_2IMG_3036

Breakfast (7:30-10:30) is included and has delicious warm croissants all the way from Le Banneton in Luang Prabang. Nic makes his own bread and the homemade passionfruit and mango jams are wonderful. Fruit, yogurt , muesli and eggs made to order and a meat and cheese plate are also available for breakfast.

IMG_2302 IMG_2304 IMG_2314IMG_3034
Lunch and dinner is available from a short menu and possibly the spaghetti, papaya salad and the beef and ginger stir fry ( mainly vegetarian) are the most tasty dishes.

IMG_1782_2-2IMG_1780_2-2
Spagetti pomandera                     Green papaya salad

IMG_1781_2-2IMG_1785_2-2

Smoked eggplant dip and vegetables              Massaman curry

IMG_1784_2-2IMG_1812_2

Chicken schnitzel                             Duck breast with bacon and vegetables (French style) (dinner only)

IMG_1813_2IMG_1779_2

Beef and ginger stir-fry
The bar provides a good range of drinks including some good fruit and vegetable combination juices like apple carrot and ginger.

IMG_3052 IMG_2080

Filtered coffee is also available and hammocks to relax in.

IMG_3047IMG_1769_2

Nic ( ex Germany) and Kenny ( ex Australia) are very easy to communicate with and know what you need. Nic is also excellent at organising transport and helping with any arrangements. A boat trip up river to pretty Muang Ngoi (500,000 kip about $AUD 73) is well worth doing.

IMG_2393 IMG_2881

IMG_2804-0IMG_2815

It includes Sop Jam for an extra 50,000 kip which has an interesting weaving industry and offers the opportunity to buy some lovely table runners/scarves.

IMG_2618 IMG_2627
A comfortable minivan pick up ( seats 11 + driver) is $120US up and $100 US back to Luang Prabang. Sadly, you can no longer travel up by boat.

IMG_3058 IMG_3060
Mandala Ou is about 10-15 min easy walk from the centre of town where there are a number of frequently recommended restaurants like Deems Indian and Chennai Indian (both don’t allow alcohol) Vangmany ( Lao food) just at the end of the bridge. Complimentary bikes are also available from Mandala Ou.

IMG_2208IMG_2933-0

The bridge is great for views and boats leave to go up river from just below the bridge.

IMG_2187-0 IMG_2228

IMG_2250 IMG_2173
Mandala Ou Resort is highly recommended as a good spot to stay, it is cheaper to book directly at around $63 US for a river view room and $52 US for a fountain view room.(30% discount as well as 3 nights for the price of 2, low season rates between 1 May and 30 September.
No credit card facilities but you are able to pay in a range of currencies at market value exchange rates.
There’s no room safe, but I understand there are no safety issues with valuables. Also, be aware that the paths and bathroom floors can get very slippery when moist.

The entrance can be tricky to see, but it’s on the right coming into Nong Kiaw.

Dyen Sabai Restaurant, Luang Prabang

Standard

IMG_2794IMG_0052

Part of Dyen Sabai’s appeal is it’s open sided hill side setting across the Nam Kham River. Easy to get to when the seasonal bridge is operating, but requires a boat ride across when the bridge is not available (due to high water levels).

IMG_4321 IMG_4319  IMG_0048IMG_1850

Well priced and offering happy hour two for one cocktails until 12-7pm, it has some great food that showcases local specialities. It’s an essential addition to your dinner itinerary and a well chosen Lonely planet top pick.

IMG_1892IMG_0052

Entree platter 2 very good for trying a range of Luang Prabang specialties

The grilled lemon fish is a stand out dish but everything is excellent.

IMG_1920 IMG_1924

Grilled lemon fish with chilli sauce                Fried eggplant with pork

IMG_1908 IMG_1914

Stir fried chicken with basil                             Minced mushrooms with mint and herbs (also surprisingly very good!)

Best to book in the busy season, but this is easy to do ahead by emailing.

Tat Kuang Si Waterfalls Luang Prabang

Standard

IMG_0178IMG_0171

The Luang Prabang Tat Kuang Si waterfalls are amazing and a great half day trip.

IMG_0179 IMG_0176 IMG_0177 IMG_0174

The water is beautifully coloured and get for swimming, the forest cool and peaceful, and there’s good cafe (average price, good food) for lunch that overlooks the falls. You can also take your own picnic or buy food from the food stalls at the entrance to the falls.

IMG_0173 IMG_0056

IMG_1665 IMG_1666

The chicken in red curry with sticky rice is wonderful (and better than the fish in red curry).

IMG_1667 IMG_1670 IMG_1674
For around $8 AUS (50,000 kip), you can book a seat in a minivan to travel by road ( around 40 mins each way). But the trip may well be best by boat (2hrs  one way+ 1hr  the other (due to river flow) 40,000 kip including 10 min tuk tuk ride each end) because the minivan is commonly full (even overbooked) making it pretty unpleasant if you end up in the back seat.

Once there, take the path that winds along the falls up to see the long drop at the top (a short, cool walk), then come back down to the picnic tables/cafe and swimming spots. Chnging rooms are provided.

(If you are keen on being the river by boat it is popular to travel from Luang Prabang to Northern Thailand (approx 250,000 kip per person including overnight at Pak Beng, bookable in Luang Prabang through travel agents like Green Discovery)).

Riverside Barbecue Restaurant, Luang Prabang

Standard

IMG_1563_2 IMG_1561_2

The Riverside Barbecue Restuarant, along the Mekong, is a fun spot to try cooking your own meal, Lao style.

It’s good value, good fun and there’s a lovely river view. Go early to get a good table (book if you can) as it’s popular and fills fast.

IMG_1667_2IMG_1189

For 60,000 kip adults 30,000 kip children, you can select from a huge range of meats and seafood, vegetables and noodles to cook at your table, by either barbecuing or cooking in broth. IMG_1153  IMG_1177

IMG_1180 IMG_1205

A wide range of cooked entrees and some icecream and coconut desserts are also available in the price.

IMG_1149IMG_1218
Clearly marked on the Lonely Planet map, follow the road from the baguette and fruit shake stalls/post office corner down to the Mekong. Turn right along the Mekong river road and look for the Riverside BBQ Restaurant sign.

Coconut Garden Luang Prabang

Standard

IMG_1260 IMG_1553

Coconut Garden Restaurant is very centrally located near the start of the night market and the other restaurants and travel agents, has a lovely garden setting at the front and back, indoor  seating upstairs with a great view, good bathroom and good food. It’s a great choice for lunch or dinner when you’re out and about town.

IMG_1036 IMG_1037 IMG_1039 IMG_1041 IMG_1042 IMG_1043 IMG_1044 IMG_1045

The Laap are the best choices on the menu and the steamed fish in banana leaf is also good and better than the chicken in banana leaf.

IMG_1050 IMG_1052

Chicken Laap                                                       Tofu Laap

IMG_1062 IMG_1075

Steamed Chicken in Banana leaf                   ……and fish

IMG_1055 IMG_1059

IMG_1057 IMG_1061

It is also a sister restaurant to L’Elephant and Cafe Ban Vat Sene.

Luang Prabang Mt Pho Si

Standard

Climbing to the top of Mt Pho Si in the centre of Luang Prabang is well worth the small effort for the great view from the top.

IMG_1634_2IMG_1526_2

The Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers slice the landscape bordered by hills and there’s a small but interesting temple at the top to see as well.

IMG_1527_2IMG_0104_2

It takes about 20 minutes to walk up and 15 mins to walk down, costs about 20,000 kip per person ($2.50 US) and is accessed by steps across the road from the entrance to the Royal Palace on Sisavanthong Street.

While it’s not a big effort to get to the top, it’s a good activity to do in the cooler part of the day.

Luang Prabang morning market

Standard

IMG_1543 IMG_1545

The morning fresh food market in Luang Prabang is colourful, interesting and an essential visit at least once. It’s also great for photos. Go early as it winds up around 11am.

IMG_1451-0 IMG_1436

It’s in the street parallel with and in-between the night market and Mekong riverside streets, between the palace and then post office. The most colourful part however, can be found in a lane through from the night market street (Sisavangvong Street) that starts opposite, but in-between the Luang Prabang Library and the fruit and baguette stands (on the corner of Sisavangvong and Kitsalat streets diagonally opposite the post office). A Hobo map is available around town (try Coconut Garden) for 20,000 – 30, 000 kip ($3-4) and well worth buying.

Morning Monks, Luang Prabang, Laos

Standard

IMG_1688_2IMG_1604_2

One of the highlights of a visit to Luang Prabang is to get up at dawn and watch the monks make their way down Sisavangvong Street from the main temple collecting alms (balls of sticky rice) from townsfolk , in their bowls. (Check with your accommodation hosts for the best time).
IMG_1689_2  IMG_1687_2

IMG_1605_2  IMG_1603_2

Villa Santi Hotel has a great location for this, as many monks pass by the front gate at dawn and then slowly making their way back to the temple in ones and twos all morning. (So if you are not able to get ups so early, it’s still possible to share a bit of the experience later in the day).

IMG_0042_2IMG_0026_2

It’s peaceful and interesting but also a wonderful opportunity for some great photos. Just remember to keep a respectful distance.

Tamnak Lao Restaurant, Luang Prabang

Standard

Tamnak Lao Restaurant, across the road from Villa Santi has a lovely balcony setting and delicious, well priced food.

IMG_2926 IMG_3176_2 IMG_2929

The top pick is the chicken in red curry but Larp is also good.

IMG_3204IMG_1601_2

Other local dishes include the Orlam stew and Luang Prabang sausage , also good.

IMG_1599_2 IMG_1598_2

IMG_1597_2 IMG_1600_2  IMG_1596_2

Tamnak Lao also runs cooking classes.
