Red Chilli Sichuan – still one of Canberra’s greats

Standard

Red Chilli Sichuan – Alinga street, City does Chinese (Sichuan) cuisine very well!

The popularity of Red Chilli Sichuan, with diners who would know, still testifies to it’s authenticity.

And the reputation is totally justified!

Suggested menu for six

Entree:

91. Stir fried shredded duck in peking sauces that comes with 8 oddly shaped pancakes $26.50, makes a great starter for up to eight people per serve.

img_0592

71. Stirfried pork in Peking Sauce and Shallots $22.50 (served with 5 pancakes, so you might need an extra)

img_0595

Main Course (one serve can give up six a taste):

86. Kung pao chicken $19.50 one of my favourites and good value

img_0584

48. Stir-fried eggplant and prawns in casserole $22

img_0581

96. Stirfried green beans with pork mince $18 (good but fairly  oily) but I think next time I’d get the popular 80. Chef special lamb slices with spicy cumin $25

img_0589

Steamed rice is generous and only $2.50 per serve.

Corkage is expensive at $10 per bottle, but this is balanced by very generous serves of rice and lots of good value dishes that are well sized.

(I’ve also been told that wine by the glass serves are very generous here.)

Five dishes is a good amount for six mixed appetities and with four rice serves.

25% discount offered with the Canberra Entertainment Book up to $30.

Total cost for food $118.50  ($20) ($88.50 with the discount ($15 per person)

Claypot Chef – in my top 10 for Canberra!

Standard

The Claypot Chef has been on my wishlist ever since Karen Really Likes Food did that magnificent piece on Chef Udaya.

Now that the warm weather is here, it was a perfect time to head to the Farrer Shops to sit out front with a lovely no corkage BYO wine and a bunch of friends to share some of the best Sri Lankan food I’ve ever had.

img_9557

When we arrived Udaya was busy in the kitchen preparing that Sri Lankan signature dish Kothu Roti. The sound of chopping on the hot plate brought back many fond travel memories.

img_9524

However, Udaya is the consummate host and he quickly arrived at our table with wine and water glasses and complimentary pappadoms. In fact he keep the water filled all night and returned with more pappadoms.

img_9533

Based on our past enjoyment and Karen’s recommendations – we chose for our group of six, one dish each of the Green Bean Curry $11 with spices and coconut milk…

img_9550

…Sri Lankan Black Pork Curry $17…..

img_9547

…Devilled Chicken $15….

img_9553

…one large rice $3…..

img_9544

…one roti each $2 each…

img_9559

And we doubled up on then Lamprias, that classic Dutch Burger Sri Lankan lunch box in a banana leaf oven-baked with a pork/chicken, a fish ball, deep fried egg, potato, eggplant, seeni sambol and spiced rice – delicious!

img_9561 img_9564

The real stand out stars were the Pork and Green Bean curries, roti and Lamprias. Udaya also arrived with some complimentary Coconut Sambol (usually $5) which was a perfect condiment – I will get that every time!

img_9570

Nothing was too much trouble for Udaiya and to complete our meal he brought us some complimentary traditional Portuguese settler inspired Love Cakes – delicious!

img_9577

We had food left (may have only needed one Lamprais) all for less than $16 per person.

Charnie’s Noodles & Dumplings, Charnwood, an expert in a classic style!

Standard

Finding myself in Canberra’s far north for work last week, I consulted the Canberra Food Bloggers for any nearby ‘do not miss’ spots for lunch.

Unanimously they agreed that I must not miss this opportunity to experience Charnie’s Noodles and Dumplings, a favourite!

And indeed Charnie’s is a specialist in that heritage classic Aussie Chinese takeaway style.

Large serves of deliciousness are very affordable, rice is cheap at $2 per person and you can take along your bottle of wine  at no charge if you want to eat in.

All this service comes with the friendliness and welcome of Sophia and her team who love to see their customers happy.

A steady stream of regulars is a testimony to its popularity with locals.

A very kind man allowed my to photograph one of this favourites chicken fritters with plum sauce $13.80

Sophia apologised for the extra $2 price rise on lamb dishes, but boy was it worth it. The Lamb Satay $17.80 was exceptional, tender slices of flavoursome lamb.

The chicken with ginger and shallots was also very good $14.80, but it was very hard to beat that lamb.

The pork and coriander dumplings $13.80 was soft and tasty, but knowing now that the steamed version comes in a broth I’d like to go back and try the fried….much easier for sharing.

Being so tasty and large, one serve from Charnie’s will go a long way, making it very affordable.

Open Tuesday to Sunday from 12 noon until late, closed Mondays.

A real local suburban gem continuing a uniquely Aussie classic cuisine and culture that’s well worth enjoying and supporting.

Taste of Bangladesh, Manuka – I still love it!

Standard

It’s been nearly 18 months since I discovered Taste of Bangladesh in Manuka and I still love it!

The prices are still absolutlely amazing – curries start at $14, rice and breads are about $3, entrees $7-9, sides $2-3, desserts $4.50 and BYO corkage for wine or beer is free!

Shafique has cooked at many Canberra restaurants and it’s easy to see his great passion for sharing his dishes.

img_2653

..and Gary does a great job of looking after the floor and is just such a nice guy too…

img_2645

I’ve got my favourites that are still hard to beat …but lately I’ve tried a few others.

Entrees:

I think my favourite is the samosas..two for $7…I love the crisp shell and the flavours and texture of the filling.

img_2635

Next would be the Onion Bhaji (onion fritters) …four for $7…so great to share with a group of four or more (you can always ask Shafique to add extra for $1.75 each).

IMG_0675

Then the Palak Papdi Chaat $9 – crispy spinach fritters on a potato salad with tamarind and yogurt

And then the chicken tikka $10 for four pieces

But I just love the Cheese and Spinach Naan $3.50 each…I always have to get that and it would make afine entree with some Raita $3.50 (yogurt and cucumber dip)

..I like it more than the Garlic Naan  $3 (which is also pillowy soft if your prefer a plainer bread)..

Mains

I still love the Chicken Dum Murgh $15.50 and the Fish Bengali best $16.50…

…but I am also a fan of the Beef dishes like Handi Dum Beef or Bhoona Beef $15 and the Khadi Lamb $16 is great too…

The Coconut Prawn or Fish Curry $16.50 are good…

img_2642

…and for variety the Palak Paneer $14 is great and the Dal Makani also good $14 and there’s the eggplant marsala $14 ( a bit like Fish Bengali but without the fish (which I prefer)..

…and rice $3 per serve

Sides are very inexpensive too like the kachumber $3 if you like a bit of salad with your meal.

And even if you can’t fit anything else in…a little Mango Kulfi $4.50 to share is a perfect way to end the evening.

img_2651

Open every night for dinner, it’s upstairs in the Style Arcade Manuka.

(Lunch bookings also available).

Best spot for parking is the Medical Centre on Furneaux Street, then just walk down Palmerston Lane.

Caphs, Manuka – trying the $15 lunch special

Standard

Caph’s, Manuka offers a $15 lunch special that includes a wine or beer, as well as a two for one deal (or half price meal for single diners) for Canberra Entertainment Book holders. This makes it excellent value for a tight budget.

The Lamb Burger is a good choice.

Trying the Pierogi Dumpling Special at the Polish Club, Turner

Standard

The Wednesday Pierogi Special night at the White Eagle Polish Club across from the O’Connor shops, has been on my wish list ever since CBR Foodie recommended it .

There’s a good looking menu Thurs -Sat, but Wednesday night is special night!

On Wednesdays there’s a choice of  4 different types of pan seared Pierogi Polish dumplings for $10…

…or $14 with a beer or wine.

The Beef with Horseradish ( with yogurt sauce, bacon, carmelised cabbage) was sold out, so it may be the favourite choice. But the Pork and Chicken served bacon and caramelised cabbage was very good.

Fellow diners reported that the Pork and Chicken was the pick over the Cheese and Potato or the Mushroom and Cabbage Pierogi.

But if you don’t fancy the Pierogi, then the Golabki – pork, beef and rice stuffed cabbage leaves, with sour cream and tomato sauce $16 looked very good. It’s a large serve and could easily be shared  (for a light meal with a drink) or with a serve of dumplings for a larger appetite.

Other Wednesday options are Ricotta Fritters $10 – cinnamon tossed dumplings with rhubarb compote that sound particularly good to try. (Maybe share a plate of savoury and sweet dumplings between two or three). Dishes do sell out though, so the earlier diners have more choice.

Pierogi may not be everyone’s choice, and it may be an option to ask for boiled rather than pan fried (either way, plenty of sour cream is good to ask for). However, it’s a great value menu and the staff and atmosphere are friendly and homely.

Not at all fine dining, it’s noisey, buzzing and casual but it feels like visiting friends of friends and a great place to meet up.

Wednesday –  Saturday evenings from 6pm

Facebook is useful for keeping up to date with the specials and the Saturday Continental Deli I’ve heard is good.
