A very special Iranian Yalda dinner!

Standard

It was a very special evening when lovely friends treated me to my very first Iranian Yalda night (solstice) – a time when family and friends gather to eat, drink and read poetry by Hafez – a first century poet/fortune teller.

It was also my first Iranian meal, very lovingly and carefully prepared…spectacular, and one I will always remember!

It reminded me of Parsi dishes I’ve eaten in Mumbai. I’m always fascinatd by the cultural and historical links that flow through through food.

Dips Hummus, Yogurt and cucumber and mint, Yogurt and dill, Beetroot

Ash (almost like a soup with spinach, lentils and noodles) with Kashk garlic fried onion and garlic

Special rice with saffron, almonds and barberries

A beautiful colourful tradtional style salad

Tah dig (crispy rice from bottom of pot) – a highly desired specialty

Yogurt drink – Doogh – a sleep enhancer ( a little like buttermilk)

Dessert – saffron creme caramel – wow!

Saffron tea, nuts and red fruits including pomegranate and persimmon (the red Colour of the fruits is special for Yalda)

Country Cooking comes to Canberra

Standard

Country came to Canberra last Saturday night when Mel and her mum from Dubbo, treated the Canberra Cooking Circle  to some real authentic old time country cooking.

img_9790 img_9763

My favourite course would have to be the faithful recreation of the CWA catering for the 1995 Peak Hill Debut Ball featuring Sweet Sherry…

img_9708 img_9719

…mashed potato and devon rolls!

img_9712

…cocktail frankfurts and tomato sauce

img_9717

…devilled eggs.

img_9715

This was followed by pumpkin soup and damper…

img_9776

..and some classic Aussie curries featuring sultanas, pineapple and just a pinch of curry powder…

img_9792 img_9793

…accompanied by banana and coconut.

img_9802

Dessert was two styles of bread and butter pudding, rice pudding and golden syrup dumplings with cream and icecream.

img_9813 img_9796img_9820

Being Cooking Circles, it was not just about enjoying the food and great company….

….but also about sharing the preparation of the desserts.

Farmers Market

Standard

Saturday mornings may have got a little colder and damper, but there’s still great warmth at the Capital Regional Farmers’ Market where Visit Canberra recently hosted an Instagram meetup for Canberra’s food bloggers and social media creators.

Even at the early hour of 7:30am the CRFM was buzzing with life and it was clear why CRFM fans make the trip out, rain, hail or shine.

Then people are great….

….you meet your friends there…

….and the food is beautiful….

…and so are the flowers.

And it very special to be treated to CIT chefs Monique, Damika and Jordan creating with the CRFM produce: chai infused porridge, gingerbread cake, upside down apple cake, gnocchi with orange sauce and braised fennel and crepes with sautéed mushrooms and spinach

Pork Barrel Cafe, Friday Night Pizza 2 for 1

The Pommodoro $33 for a large has pancetta, provolone and semi dried tomatoes.

The Deli is also a good choice with spinach, raosted pumpkin, spanish onion, fetta and olives, also $33 for a large sized.

Two large pizzas is a comfortable amount for six people and works out at $5.50 each.

Add a garden salad for $10.50 for a large size.

Not BYO but a large glass of house wine is $7.

An especially good option when Elighten is on each March.

Chong Co, Woden – perfect for creating an easy dinner party with take-away

Standard

Buying some good quality takeaway that can be easily shared and replacing it at home is a great way to cater for a group without too much fuss or cost.

Chong Co in Woden has great dishes that are well sized for sharing.

Good choices include…
Thai beef salad $17.90

Prawn lemongrass stir fry $20.90

Beef massaman curry $16.90

Pork panning curry $16.90

Chilli basil mixed vegetables with tofu stir fry $14.90

(but better with chicken)

Add some steamed rice…and it’s done.

Chong Co efficiently wraps the takeaway in glad wrap so it stays warm enough for summer eating for ups to one hour without reheating.
NB The Fried tofu and sweet chilli sauce is not such a great choice as it’s fairly bland.

Dionysis Winery, Murrumbateman

Standard

Dionysis Winery, very near to Four Winds Winery, at Murrambateman….

…..is another Canberra winery where you can taste the wines….

….and enjoy a glass for $7.50 with some eats.

(The white wines are especially good.)

At the moment Dionysis is renovating so Michael and Wendy are offering just the cheese platter at $16 for one, or $30 for two people…..

The cheeses are delicious.

It makes a lovely spot to enjoy with friends on the weekend.

Canberra Cooking Circles – What A Great idea!

Standard

As Her Canberra and goodfood have already discovered – it’s such a simple, but successful idea – gathering women together in a home, around a meal that is dear to the host’s heart.

New friendship’s are formed, passions and new ventures are shared, new tastes are discovered and the world becomes a little smaller as new cultures are explored through food.
Most recently, a bunch gathered in Juliet’s kitchen  with glasses of wine as she prepared foods from South Africa that everyone shared for lunch.
There were delicious boerewors with  a white maize pap and a tasty tomato and onion sauce.
But probably everyone’s favourite was the Melkert.
And next month it will be someone else’s kitchen and a different meal – which might be lead by the host, or their neighbour, mum  or friend.
Not too fancy, expensive or high pressure, just casual and easy.
But it works so well and everyone chips in to cover the cost of the meal.
There’s no obligation to host or attend, but by joining the Facebook group you can find out what’s happening.
Highly recommended for sharing food and cultures food with new friends.

Mandalay Bus, Haig Park, Braddon – just as good as ever!

Standard

The Mandalay Bus in Haig Parkin Braddon is still going strong.

Open Wednesday to Sunday from 6pm, the favourites on the regular menu are as good as ever….

Satay Chicken with Kimchi on Roti $9

Spicy Pork Tortilla $10

Burmese Chicken Coconut Noodles $10

Vegetarian Samosaa $9

However there are some great specials to try too…

Jalapeno Aioli Fries $9

…and  the Burmese Style Greeen Bean Salad with coriander, peanuts and tamarind dressing $11. It’s a large serve of crisp green beans with a tart yet sweet and light dressing and a yogurt garnish. It’s lighter than the other dishes and an excellent choice on a warm evening.

The Peach and Vanilla Pannacotta $8 is just beautiful and worth getting just because it looks so great. The fresh peach is accompanied by wonton crisps, cream, pannacotta and raspberries.

The Crispy Lamb Ribs with Asian cabbage $15 while tasty and a good sized serve, is very fatty.

It’s till a good option to take your own chairs, wine and glasses and set up under the trees.
