Located centrally on Northbourne Ave, next to the corner chemist, the Global Cafe doesn’t look much from the outside.

But the food is wonderful and the hospitality generous and welcoming.

The combination injera meal serve sizes are large and made for sharing. There is no corkage cost for wine. This might just be the very best value in town.

Open Monday to Friday only, for lunch and dinner, the cafe closes around 8:00-8:30pm. Bookings are taken.
The Global cafe website hosts some excellent background information on Ethiopian cuisine that adds great value to this global culinary experience.

Located in University House at ANU , this historic restaurant, offers white linen table cloths and heritage decor.

The menu is quite short but sufficient, and wine is reasonably priced. (No BYO).

The complimentary bread is delicious as is a complimentary d’oevre (this time cucumber, pumpkin and pine nuts). Try to book the tables rather than the booths for better ambiance.

Spicy Ginger Cuisine – Canberra City

Spicy Ginger Cuisine is a popular spot for Sichuan cuisine, close to ANU on the corner of Childers Street.

The decor is and atmosphere are inviting and attractive and staff are friendly and efficient.
Dishes are delicious and serve sizes are generous, great for sharing between even six or seven people.
Four dishes with rice would be suitable for four to six people.
Prices range, but some of my favourites were the least expensive. Rice is only $2 per serve.
BYO is available at $8 corkage per bottle.
Parking can be tricky if it’s busy, but after hours, it’s worth trying near the Drill Gallery on Kingsley Street.

Centrally located in Garema Place, this friendly family run restaurant offers great food, generously served at great prices. It’s a good spot for a casual Saturday lunch group lunch.

Corvida, Swinger Hill- Lunch Special (Tues to Sat)

Corvina at the Swinger Hill shops in Mawson, Canberra has been open since June 2014, in the site previously occupied by the popular Italian Santa Lucia Restaurant.

It continues the style of Santa Lucia and like it’s predecessor it offers a great value lunch special, Tuesday to Saturday.

A short drive from Woden, it’s a good weekday lunch choice, but also makes a good Saturday option.

The $13.90 lunch special includes wine or softdrink, Italian bread and a choice of two delicious salads (the mushroom salad is excellent and the chicken salad is very good), a selection of pastas (the pesto fettucine is good), two risottos (chicken is better than the vegetarian), soup and pizza.

If dining as a group, it’s a great idea to order a selection of dishes and share a variety of flavours and textures.

The chardonnay is very good and a generous serve and the bread is also very good.

Service is friendly and attentive. Decor is pleasant. There is indoor and outdoor seating. BYO is $6.50 per bottle for extra wine.

The Corvina lunch special is a worthy challenger to Woden Belluci’s similar $20 lunch special. Corvina certainly wins on value. But Belluci’s dishes are probably the winners for taste and visual appeal.

I know this just says one person but it’s a toss up between Christine Manfield – author of   ‘Tasting India’ , TV presenter and food travel to India guide or Chantelle O’Brien – the Aussie author of the Penguin Food Guide to India who has travelled around India to introduce us to the history, styles and eateries of regional Indian food. I’d love their jobs!

What is your favourite kitchen appliance and why? 

My freezer – I love having small portions of lots of delicious foods on hand so I never have to waste a dining opportunity.

Kusina is Canberra’s only Philippino cuisine restaurant.
Family run, the service is thoughtful, friendly and attentive.

The decor is casual, but very homely and pleasant.
Ready to chat about traditional dishes and styles of cooking, wait staff are helpful and as engaged with ordering as any fine dining experience.
I tend to agree with the reviewer who decided none of the dishes on the menu will disappoint.
Everything seems to have interesting and unique flavours and textures, a real education and pleasure.

Stand out dishes were the Ukoy (prawn fritters) and the Sizzling baka (beef rib curry).
But the Halo Halo is great for dessert as a Philippino must have specialty.
Dishes are well sized for sharing and good value. Kusina also offers a 25% discount with a Canberra Entertainment Book voucher.

Pistachios really rates highly on all measures, making it a true all rounder and one of Canberra’s best restaurants.
Meals are well priced ($30 mains).
It’s BYO at $7 corkage.
Staff are friendly and service good.

Decor, though perhaps dated, still sets a good standard with thick carpet, white linen table cloths and soft lighting.
It has a true ‘Canberra’ quality, non-pretentious, stylish and confident, but conservative and not trendy.
The feel is relaxed yet special.

Serve sizes are generous. And so are all the extras at no cost like nuts as a starter (pistachios naturally), bread on the side and an exquisite chocolate with coffee.

But perhaps the absolute best things about Pistachio’s is it’s Trio of entrees ($19) and Tasting platter of all desserts ($19, best shared between too) a wonderful opportunity to try seven dishes.

The food is of a very high standard and equal to other fine dining Canberra modern Australian restaurants.

While it’s a little out of the way, tucked away in Torrens shops, parking is very easy.

The Taj Mahal Indian Restaurant, on Northbourne Ave, offers a good value lunch special that includes a samosa, main dish, rice, 1/2 naan, and raita and banana sides for $23.

It also has a private function room, that is ideal for a group with very flexible booking conditions. Staff were friendly and warm and very accommodating.

The raita is delicious and serve sizes of curries are generous.
The chicken dishes, especially the creamy chicken dishes (butter chicken, chicken korma) are better than the lamb which can be a bit chewy.
The Taj Mahal is a good spot for sharing dishes as a group particularly if the group needs to keep to a budget.

Beef dog with chilli beans  (quite good) Haloumi dog with basil and Hummous (even better).

The Treehouse Bar has great lunch and mid week evening specials. Recently the Wednesday night special changed from a $10 roller and beer/cider special to a $10 gourmet hotdog and beer/cider (wine if you’re lucky) special.

Not quite as good as the rollers, but the hand cut chips and aioli are still there and the chilli bean, pork, chicken and haloumi options still feature.

Booking the booth upstairs overlooking the bar, is a great spot for a group.
