Silver Fox, Curtin – a first look at a couple of brilliant salad options for lunch

Standard

Silver Fox has recently opened in the spot where Delissios used to be in Curtin.

IMG_0366 IMG_0367

Parking is easy and it’s just a few minutes drive from the Woden CBD.

Pleasant décor and friendly, helpful staff make it an attractive place for lunch. It is also fairly quiet and an easy place for conversation.

IMG_0369

In addition to pizza, pasta and grills, Silver Fox offers a couple of interesting salad options that are truly good!

IMG_0368

An excellent fruit and nut salad of strawberry, pear, brazil nut and almonds with rocket, red onion, mint and balsamic vinaigrette ($18 for the regular size), has got the perfect balance of sweet, crunch and mint and is generous with the nuts.

IMG_0372

An equally good, but perhaps a little more oily, warm roast vegetable salad  ($20 for the regular size) of sweet potato, pumpkin, carrot and celery with walnuts, red onion, baby spinach, semi-dried tomato has a seriously good maple-cinnamon toffee dressing. It’s especially good topped with prawns (an extra $8 for 6) but I’ve also heard the crispy calamari ($6 extra) is terrific.

IMG_0371

Half serves are offered for a little less cost e.g. $15/$18 compared to $18/$20 for the regular size  but it’s good to get the larger serve for not much more and share both between two people.

Other good choices are said to be the Creamed Chicken Penne Pasta with pine nuts, broccolini, baby spinach, parmesan and oregano $22, Seafood Aglio Olio Linguine with prawns, squid and smoked salmon, caper berries, fennel, cherry tomatoes, and rocket $25 and the Mexican Beef Pizza with spiced beef and beans, jalapeno peppers and mozzarella, rocket, corn salsa and cheddar cheese $22. (The Greek Garlic Prawns Pizza $22, also sounds wonderful with herb-garlic butter, prawns, capers and mozzarella with parmesan cheese, fresh red onion, rocket and aioli.)

A great idea would be to take a few friends and share one of each.

Prices are what you would expect for mid-range Italian style restaurants.

There is also a 25% discount offered to Canberra Entertainment Book Holders making it excellent value for good food.

And if you can’t make it to them, they can bring the food to you at work.

There’s even a discount for 5 (1/2 price for one meal ) or 10 (one meal free).

Serve sizes are the same as those in the restaurant and meals are delivered in clear take-away plastic containers or pizza boxes as appropriate.

Glasses of wine start at $7 a glass.

BYO wine is an option for $10 corkage per bottle.

Quizine, Phillip – an excellent spot for a light tasty lunch close to Woden

Standard

While it used to be a bit tricky to order a nicely balanced meal at Quizine, they now have it well sorted so that the Fit Meals have a fixed price for a bit of everything and you get to choose what to put together.

IMG_0323 IMG_0316

So first you choose whether you’d like a 125gm protein food meal for $12.50 or a 200gm protein food meal for $15.50.

IMG_0328

Then you can choose what type of protein food e.g. steak/chicken breast in various styles/poached white fish/lentil slice (or 200gm salmon for an extra $3).

Add one or two carb/veg/salad bases (so one carb, one veg/salad works well) and a side sauce e.g. garlic aioli, chunky satay, peri-peri mayo.

If you’d like any extras like avocado, salsa or pesto or a couple of poached eggs, that would be $2.50 more.

IMG_0329

If that is too much choice you can just go with one of the ready to go combinations like the…

Classic – 200gm lightly grilled chicken breast with brown rice, broccoli and carrots and chunky satay salsa $15.50…

IMG_0321

Or a Lean and Clean – 200gm poached white fish, white rice and gourmet garden salad and lemon $15.50.

IMG_0322

Tender Chicken Salad – $15.50, Sweet Potato and Quinoa Salad $14.50 and Chicken Caesar Salad $15, are also available.

IMG_0317 IMG_0318

A little bit sweet treats are also available for about $3 each.

IMG_0319 IMG_0320

Canberra Entertainment Book Holders are offered two meals for the price of one making Quizine excellent value.

Open Mon-Fri 7:00am – 5:00pm and Sat 7:30am – 4:30pm.

Urban Pantry, Manuka – lovely for lunch

Standard

While Urban Pantry shares much in common with Me & Mrs Jones, The Public Bar and Cream, it really does have the nicest setting (especially in the good weather) and arguably the best menu for lunch.

IMG_0315 IMG_0314

In fact it’s hard to pick from so many delicious sounding salads, gourmet burgers and grills, and  that’s without even looking at the great changing specials on the wall inside.

The Urban Nicoise is not only delicious and delightfully light but also very beautiful ($21) with poached salmon, heirloom tomatoes, green beans, potato, an olive and tuscan onion salsa and aioli.

IMG_0310

The Straighty 180 is a good choice for something more filling and traditional ($19) with a 180gm beef patty, mustard, onion marmalade, gherkins, ketchup and cheddar on a brioche bun.

IMG_0309 IMG_0313

Like Me & Mrs Jones, The Public Bar and Cream, Urban Pantry is open 7 days and Canberra Entertainment Book holders are offered two meals for the price of one making it good value.

Like Me & Mrs Jones, BYO wine is $5.50 corkage per person. Cakeapge is $2.50 per person.

Urban Pantry is very popular on the weekends so do book to get a table overlooking the lawns if it’s a lovely day.

(There is a surcharge of 10% for Sundays and 15% for public holidays).

Trading hours

Monday-Tuesday 7:00am – 6pm

Wheat & Oats Café, Phillip – still a great pick for lunch near Woden.

Wheat & Oats Café Phillip is still an excellent place for lunch if you need to stay near Woden. It’s a short 10-15 minute walk from Woden office buildings and service is very quick.

There’s even a good range of ready to options if time is especially short.

IMG_0288
Daily specials change but always include some interesting gourmet sandwiches for $7 like…
…pumpkin and fetta…

IMG_0286
…chicken, avocado and baby spinach on rye sourdough bread…

IMG_0290

And a BLT and vegetarian roasted vegetable sandwiches.

IMG_0287
These are great value and particularly nice toasted.
The hot specials are always delicious and good value too like…

IMG_0289

There’s inside and outside seating, very friendly and helpful service, a lovely casual atmosphere and a discount of 25% for Canberra Entertainment Book holders.

It’s hard to find a better value spot with such a nice atmosphere, so close to Woden.

Bicicletta – trying the dinner banquet

Standard

Bicicletta at the Peppers Gallery Hotel (formerly the Acton Hotel) offers groups of 12 or more, a banquet option.

IMG_4971

Entrée and Main courses cost $50 per person and you can add a dessert course and coffee for an extra $10 per person.

IMG_0263

The main advantage of choosing the banquet is that you can share and sample a wide range of dishes on the menu (14 in all).

However, while overall there is plenty of food for even larger appetites, and the entrée dishes are generous, the main and dessert dishes are served in much smaller sizes (e.g. 3-4 pieces only) . This makes sharing very difficult between people in a large group unless you bring a sharp knife and cut them up into small pieces.

So while it’s  a great opportunity to try lots of great dishes on the menu, you need to be happy with some small samples.

The banquet for 15 includes:

Entrees:

IMG_0283

Fritto di Calamari – fried baby squid with crispy jalapeno and tartare sauce – (delicious) – two plates for 15 people

IMG_0250

Pizza Bread – freshly cooked pizza bread with garlic, chilli and extra virgin oil – ( very good) – two plates for 15 people

IMG_0251

Caprese – classic Italian salad, fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese, oregano and basil, heirloom and “rose verace” tomatoes and extra virgin oil (excellent)  – 3 bowls for 15 people

IMG_0254

Antipasto Dello chef – selection of arancini, cured  meats with crispy marinated olives and sundried tomatoes – two platters for 15 people

IMG_0248

The entrees are plentiful and include one arancini per person. The calamari and caprese salad are especially good and the pizza bread is a good tasty nibble.

The antipasto meats probably lack some appeal unless there are larger, hungrier appetites to fill.

Mains:

IMG_0284

Fusilli alla Bolognese – traditional pasta with Nonna’s 3 meat bolognaise sauce (surprisingly very lovely  flavours, two plates for 15 people)

IMG_0260

Tortellini di Zucca – homemade tortellini stuffed with roasted pumpkin in a creamy gorgonzola sauce finished with pine nuts and parmesan ( nice, but not as tasty as it sounds, two plates for 15 people)

IMG_0257

Guanciale di Maiale – pork belly braised in balsamic and herbs, apple & rhubarb mousse with a sweet balsamic reduction (flavoursome, but quite fatty and only three pieces to share between 15)

IMG_0256

Pesce Frescio – Fish of the day ( the salmon is very nice and served with a pesto, but again, only three pieces for 15 people)

IMG_0255

Steamed green vegetables – three bowls for 15 people

IMG_0262

Salad with rocket, parmesan and beetroot crisps – two bowls for 15 people

IMG_0261-0

Suprema di pollo e prosciutto – pan tossed chicken breast stuufed with basil taleggio, wrapped with prosciutto served with Tuscan style rosemary cream potato on an avocado paste (the pick of the mains, but only three serves to share between 15 people)

IMG_0258

The main courses are also good, especially the chicken and surprising the bolognaise pasta (great for plainer eaters). However, while there are two bowls of pasta and this is easy to share, it’s very tricky to share the pork belly, salmon and chicken.

Dessert & coffee:

IMG_0285

Tiramisu (nice, but not the best pick, and only three serves to share between 15)

IMG_0265

Millefoglie – puff pastry filled with strawberry and lemon custard, mascarpone and vincotto mousse (pleasant but not as flavoursome as it sounds and only four pieces to share)

IMG_0266

Vanilla Pannacotta – creamy vanilla bean milk custard with orange zest and chilli orange glaze (very delicious, the pick of the desserts, but again, only four to share).

IMG_0264

The first two courses are plenty of flavour variety and quantity to satisfy. Dessert is not really necessary and it is tricky to share the small number of serves between a large group.

Also, while it’s good to try several of menu options, it’s really the Pannacotta that is outstanding.

Overall, the food is delicious and it’s a fun and interesting experience to sample such a wide range on the menu.

However it is possibly more food than you need if you want to leave still feeling comfortable (especially the three course option) and the serve sizes can be very difficult to share so that everyone gets a taste.

Generously there’s a 25 % discount up to $40 for Canberra Entertainment Card holders (even on the banquet price) and up to three cards are accepted happily.

An alternate option is to design and order your own banquet. This gives you more flexibility and allows you to keep costs down and meal sizes comfortable. You can also go for dishes that are easier to share in a group.

A suggested menu for 6 people could include:

1 serve pizza bread as a starter (this normally includes 8 pieces for $13)

IMG_0251

Mains:

1 pizza cut into six ( the formaggi –  mozzarella, Italian cacio di bufala, Italian parmigiano and pecorino served with fresh rocket $22 is very good if available)

IMG_4980

2 Caprese salad – classic Italian salad, fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese, oregano and basil, heirloom and “rose verace” tomatoes and extra virgin oil $16 each)

IMG_0252

2 Pasta dishes – e.g. the Fusilli alla Bolognese – traditional pasta with Nonna’s 3 meat bolognaise sauce $23 each

IMG_0260

Dessert:

Gelati $4 per scoop Pistachio and Chocolate if available.

Total per person $23 ($17 with the Entertainment Card Discount)

Not BYO but wine starts at $8 per glass and bottles start at $37 for the Bicicletta Pinot Grigio

Eling Forest Winery, Sutton Forest – a good spot to stop on the way back from Sydney

Standard

Eling Forest Winery is conveniently located about half way between Sydney and Canberra just before Sutton Forest/Sally’s Corner McDonalds (on the right) just off the left hand side of the freeway.
It’s the best spot on the way back from Sydney to stop for a coffee, breakfast or lunch.

It does get busy, and while it’ s nice to sit inside by the fire when it’s cold, there’s always a seat outside (nice in the good weather). If it’s busy weekend it can be worth phoning ahead to book.

IMG_0221 IMG_0233 IMG_0234

Coffees are $4 ($4.50 for a mug) and there’s some gorgeous house baked treats to go with it starting from $7.50 for scones with jam and cream to $9 for a slice of cake.

IMG_0223 IMG_0222

Delicious Lemon and Coconut Cake with a regular and mug sized coffee.

The breakfast menu includes light items like Sour cherry toast $6.50 and eggs in various dishes from plain $12 to Moroccan eggs with beef shiploads, labneh, pancetta, sourdough and duke and lemon $16.50. It’s available *:30am-11am although the sour cherry toast can be ordered with coffee for longer.

IMG_0228 IMG_0227

The lunch menu changes each week based on what is seasonal.

IMG_0235

It includes light items like toasted turkish sandwiches $13.50 to more filling options often served with salad and maybe chips/wedges $17.50-$23. They all sound delicious.

Well run, stylish and showcasing good coffee (house ground) and a passion for great food, Erling Forest Winery Cafe will be a winner, even if you just stop for something light.

Thai Chiang Rai, Woden Southern Cross Club – a first look at lunch off the main menu

Standard

Thai Chiang Rai, recently opened upstairs in the Woden Southern Cross Club, replacing my loved Chong Co.
While it serves some good Express Lunches, if there’s a few of you, it can be better for variety to share dishes from the main menu.

IMG_0236

Two dishes with rice is enough for 4 modest appetites.

IMG_0239

The $9.90 rice serve is very large and would serve 5 people.

IMG_0237

For two people the $4.90 size would be plenty.

IMG_0240

The Massaman Beef Curry $19.90 has a delicious sauce and is generous, but like the Express Lunch red beef curry, the beef is not so tender.

Perhaps a chicken curry is a better pick.

The Chicken Stirfry (also generous) with Dry Chilli and Cashews is good, but possibly there are better stirfry choices.

IMG_0238

Well worth working through the menu though, as it’s such a nice place.

A series of five lessons with Vinnys covers a range of dishes including vegetable curries, dahls and versatile dips as well as classic breads like pooris, parathas and chapattis.
