Hotel Realm – a weekend getaway close to home!

Standard

While a special dinner out can easily cost two people at least $250 it could also buy a night at be Hotel Realm with enough to cover breakfast the next day at one of the many great eateries near by.

A night in a one bedroom apartment (319 is good) costs around $200…

…..and includes a balcony for drinks…

…a Nespresso machine, spacious fridge and kitchen, microwave, toaster, dishwasher, bath, pool, bathrobes, magazines and spa.

Muse, Local Press, Me &Mrs Jones, Public Bar, the Merchant and Urban Pantry are all good spots for breakfast.

With no travelling time it’s close to home and easy to work in with other commitments.

And if you can bear to leave all the luxury to go out to eat for dinner, then Lilotang, Ostani and Buvette are close by.

Miss Van’s, Westside, Acton – a first look!

Standard

Miss Van’s is perhaps the most popular of the street food options at Westside. Serving colourful dishes full of fresh herbs and classic Vietnamese flavours, it’s a fun spot for a casual lunch or dinner in the good weather.

There’s plenty of seating nearby although it can get busy at weekends.

Take your own drinks and glasses and anything else you might need like plates for sharing dishes.

The regular menu includes a range of Banh Mi like the Vietnamese Pork roll $8 with five spiced red pork, Vietnamese pork loaf and homemade pate.

There are also two gluten free noodle salad bowls each $13.
The rice noodles (quite a lot of the dish is noodles) are topped with a salad of beans shoots, cucumber, lightly pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, fried onion and garlic and Vietnamese dressing.

Surprising the Lemongrass and Chilli Tofu is the top pick …..

……ahead of the Ginger Soy Chicken.

There are also changing specials on offer.

Service is efficient but not as welcoming or as flexible as Daana.

Open Wednesday to Sunday for lunch, Wednesday to Saturday for dinner.

Four Winds Vineyard, Murrumbateman

Standard

Canberra has some great wineries offering tastings and a few also have a short menu that you can use to create a child-friendly lunch with friends.

IMG_2036 IMG_2042

Four Winds Vineyard is one of these, offering a choice of four great $15 nine inch pizzas from their wood-fired pizza oven on weekends.

IMG_2037IMG_2038

IMG_2050 IMG_2051

They are served in some lovely grassy surroundings where plenty of room for children to run around safely in the summer.

IMG_2044 IMG_2045

In the winter the wood fire is a cozy inside spot but it may not be so good for young children.

IMG_2040 IMG_2046

It’s hard to know which pizza is the best…

IMG_2052

….but perhaps the BBQ Chicken Pizza is the most memorable with BBQ sauce, chicken, red onion, gorgonzola and cheese….

IMG_2055

….followed by the Potato Pizza with potato, onion, gorgonzola, rosemary and cheese….

IMG_2053

….then the Salami Pizza with tomato sauce, salami, black olives and cheese….

IMG_2054

….and finally the Caramelised Onion Pizza (the special of the month) with wilted baby spinach, caramelised onion, toasted pine nuts, balsamic vinegar and cheese.

IMG_2056

Do try the wines and perhaps purchase a glass to go with your pizzas.

IMG_2047 IMG_2043

Located very close to Murrumbateman, do make sure you leave plenty of time (40 mins) to travel out from Canberra.

IMG_2039 IMG_2041

Wine tasting: 10am – 5pm each weekend.

Wood-fired pizzas: 12-3pm each weekend.

A great Christmas Party idea – $20 for three courses with drinks at Taste of Bangladesh, Manuka

Standard

If you’re hosting a large party, but want to eat out, it can be hard to find a budget friendly venue that’s flexible and happy to work with you to create a great lunch or night out for your friends, family or work colleagues.

IMG_1930IMG_0520

So Taste of Bangladesh upstairs in the Style Arcade in Manuka is a real gem.

Not only do they serve delicious, well priced dishes in generous serves for sharing but they charge no corkage and have plenty of room for a large group to relax.

IMG_1924 IMG_1921 IMG_0666

For $20-$25 per person (depending on what you spend on the wine) you can enjoy three courses along with drinks.
And if you want to give people the opportunity to mingle and chat over a drink when they arrive, just ask for the private area and some entree fingers foods like onion bhaji with mint and tamarind chutneys ($7 for 4) and chicken tikka pizza $12 per pizza ( slice into 8-9 pieces) to be served as canapés.

IMG_0675 IMG_0674 IMG_0673image

Pappadoms are complimentary and another snack that’s good with a drink.

IMG_1929
By ordering three dishes ($14 – $16.50), a raita ($3.50) two rice ($3 each) and two naan ($2.50 each) per 4-5 people, there’s a good range of flavours that’s perfect for sharing.

Fish Bengali…

IMG_1931

Chicken Dum Murgh…

IMG_1935

and Palak Paneer….

IMG_1933

are always winners and the cheese and spinach naan is delicious!).

IMG_1934

The Yellow dal is great too, especially if more people like vegetarian dishes.

IMG_1932
Either share some gulab jaman and mango kulfi (both $4.50 each)…

image image

….or bring along your own cake and cream ( or other dessert) to share for dessert.

IMG_1922 IMG_1936
Cakeage is $1 per person but it also means you can bring your own soft drinks, juice and decorations (it’s a ‘party charge’ actually).

Whatever you need just have a chat to Shafique and Fahana who just want to do whatever they can to make your lunch or dinner a success!

Daana, Westside, true South Indian hospitality

Standard

In South India there is a tradition that ‘the guest is God’. At Daana, Westside Acton, Sunita and Sanjay are following that tradition, making their ‘guests’ feel welcome and special.

Sunita faithfully recreates  dishes full of flavour from her home town Palakkad in Kerala, including Canberra’s rare (perhaps only) fresh idli and a range of vada.

Idli Sambar $10 – steamed rice and lentil cakes  served with coconut and tomato chutneys and sambar – a spiced lentil and vegetable stew.

Dal Vada – a crunchy and mildly spiced Bengal lentil dumpling served with coconut chutney $10.

I’ve also heard the Peanut Chakna is very good.

But perhaps the star of the menu is the dosa! Choose from a marsala spiced potato filling or a very delicious spiced lamb mince.

A generous serving of two dosa with coconut and tomato chutneys and the  very good sambar is $14.

If there’s two or more of you, it’s great fun to get the family sized dosa to share ($30 for the lamb $28 for the potato filling).

Other options are the Onion Pakora $8 – crispy onion fritters with tamarind chutney and mint yogurt

Be transported back to Bombay with a Vada Pao $12.

Travel and Beyond raves about the biriyani that’s served on Sundays. Sunita makes the Andhra Biriyani and Sanjay the Chicken and Goat Biriyanis. The style of biriyani will depend on which week you go, but why not try them all.

Daana is a great spot to head with a group. Grab some tables, take your own wine and glasses and order some dishes to share.

For a group of eight,  two plates of Dal Vada with a drink, followed by two plates of idli and then two set of Dosa (or a family dosa), would be perfect.

And do finish with a Marsala Chai, made from scratch with a special home-made blend of spices.

There’s plenty of gluten free options on the menu like idli, dosa and onion pakora.

Sanita and Sanjay are generous with their food and extra plates and sambar and chutneys are no trouble, but most of all they are generous of themselves and will do what it takes to make sure you enjoy your visit.

Daana is cute by day and cosy by night. It’s a small spot in plain surroundings but Sunita and Sanjay have created a haven of warmth and friendliness, that you will remember as you leave, promising yourself to be back soon for more.

An easy Raita & Dahl Paratha – and creative ways with leftover Indian dishes!

Standard

Vinnys’ Aroma and Spice cooking lessons are meant to inspire but also to be easy.

And Vinnys’ raita really is easy.

She uses a low fat natural yogurt…(but thick Greek natural yogurt is also great)….

…and diced vegetables (like tomato, capsicum, cucumber)…

….mixed with salt, spices, a little sugar …

….and any combination of fresh dill, coriander and mint. (This which really makes this dish.)

Temper the raita with some cooked whole spices (optional).

Raita paired with a dal paratha is an easy entree or a complete light meal.

For the Parathas…

Leftover dal is used to add moisture to the wheat flour (and a little besan flour).

Some extra dried spices are added to the dal before mixing and fresh herbs are added to the dough.

Vinnys explains that this paratha traditionally has an eclectic shape so that can make even beginners’ efforts look good.

A raita and parathas makes a great start to a meal….

IMG_1757

….a raita is the perfect accompaniment to main dishes….

IMG_1778

…and raita with leftover curries, rice and salad in a wrap makes a great Kathi roll….

IMG_1510IMG_1279

….or use raita with leftovers to make a great Thali!

Vinnys teaches in her home kitchen on Sunday afternoons. For more information contact Vinnys at vinnystanve@yahoo.com.au

Taste of Bangladesh, Manuka – an easy dinner party take-away option!

Standard

While dining out is good fun, there is something lovely about inviting friends to your home for dinner. Its more relaxed and easier to mingle and meet new people. At home, an open fire in winter or an atmospheric terrace on a summer evening can set the scene for a great night.

IMG_1002

However hosting a dinner party for a larger group can seem very daunting if you’re busy.

But wouldn’t it be great if you could outsource most of the work, without it costing the high price of professional catering.

Taste of Bangladesh offers a very useful take-away family pack that’s perfect for this purpose. Being the lovely, flexible couple that they are, Shafique and Fahana are also happy to work with you on some reasonable swaps to cater for exactly what you need.

image

If you add your own simple salad of cucumber and tomato, cook your own rice and serve your own dessert, then one family pack for $71 can serve up to eight people.

IMG_1046 IMG_1054 IMG_1044

If you don’t live too far away they can even deliver it not to your door for $3 extra.

Start by setting an inviting table and perhaps adding some incense and Indian music!

IMG_1041IMG_1043 IMG_1042

Set out some wine, water and juice and a few nibbles for mingling.

IMG_1045

The Taste of Bangladesh family pack includes 8 entree pieces, four onion bhaji and four chicken tikka, but you can ask Shafique to just include 8 onion bhaji.

IMG_1051

The onion bhaji come with tamarind and mint chutneys and Shafique even includes some complimentary pappadoms!

IMG_1049 IMG_1048

Serve the chutneys and bhaji for entree using your own serving dishes.

IMG_1050 IMG_1053

IMG_1004

By cooking your own rice instead of including it in the order, you can have plenty on hand. Also, if you don’t take the rice, you can ask to upgrade the 4 plain naan to the more tasty cheese and spinach naan instead.

IMG_1057 IMG_1056

Asking Shafique to cut the naan into quarters makes it easier for sharing.

Serve the raita and the mains in your own dishes too.

IMG_1052-0

Some of the four set mains ( beef vindaloo, butter chicken, lamb saag and minja handi (a cheese and vegetable dish)) be swapped, if you choose similarly priced dishes.

If you have more than 6-8 people you might want to order two or more family packs. If you do it can be handy to get more of the same dish, for example three Chicken Dum Murfh, three Fish Bengali and two palak Paneer work well.

IMG_1055

Finish with a simple dessert of your own, made ahead of time or even some gourmet icecream served in glassware and garnished with a few frozen berries.

IMG_0995 IMG_1003

Finish with tea and coffee and a chocolate to round it all off.

IMG_1058

For a small amount of planning and organisation and some big (but not too pricey) help from Taste of Bangladesh you can add your own special touches to a delicious Indian feast and create a night to remember!
