For dinner for two at Baan Latsamy, you can’t beat the Crunchy Eggplant with Chicken and Prawn for entree (2 pieces for $12.90) and the Hot Pot Roast Duck for $24.90 with a serve of rice, $3.50.

Even if there are three or four of you, the two pieces of duck can be shared easily and it’s well worth it. The flavours are unbeatable with a lovely star anise spice pulling it together.

Canberra Cooking Circles – What A Great idea!

Standard

As Her Canberra and goodfood have already discovered – it’s such a simple, but successful idea – gathering women together in a home, around a meal that is dear to the host’s heart.

New friendship’s are formed, passions and new ventures are shared, new tastes are discovered and the world becomes a little smaller as new cultures are explored through food.
Most recently, a bunch gathered in Juliet’s kitchen  with glasses of wine as she prepared foods from South Africa that everyone shared for lunch.
There were delicious boerewors with  a white maize pap and a tasty tomato and onion sauce.
But probably everyone’s favourite was the Melkert.
And next month it will be someone else’s kitchen and a different meal – which might be lead by the host, or their neighbour, mum  or friend.
Not too fancy, expensive or high pressure, just casual and easy.
But it works so well and everyone chips in to cover the cost of the meal.
There’s no obligation to host or attend, but by joining the Facebook group you can find out what’s happening.
Highly recommended for sharing food and cultures food with new friends.

Me & Mrs Jones, Kingston – trying a couple lunch salads

Standard

Me & Mrs Jones is a one of the best places in Kingston for lunch.

It’s open everyday, has a broad ranging menu and offers two meals for the price of one if you have a Canberra Entertainment Card.

The salads make a good lunch choice, especially sharing a couple between two, or sharing one with another dish.

The SMOKED CHICKEN $18 with Treacle smoked chicken, crispy speck lardons, garden peas, mint, marinated feta, shredded baby cos, white balsamic reduction w/ brioche crisps is full of flavour but quite rich.

The SPRING LAMB $21 with Rare spring lamb, mixed seeds & nuts, currants, kale, pomegranate, mint & a fresh yoghurt dressing is perhaps the better choice, being a little lighter, with good textures and garnishes and full of colour.

If you want an even broader choice for lunch, get there before noon on weekday to be able to order from the breakfast menu too. (Lunch menu starts at noon).
Do book as it gets busy and if you’d like to BYO wine it’s $5.50 corkage per person.

How to find the best food when travelling!

Standard

Great tips from The Globe Getter.….
So, how does one find the best food to eat when traveling, and how can one be an “ideal eater” while experiencing other cultures?

Walk away from the main tourist drag. It’s likely full of overpriced, mediocre food.

Learn the culinary customs of where you are and embrace them.

Get out of your comfort zone (e.g., don’t buy a Big Mac from McDonald’s if that’s your usual thing).

Understand that food is about so much more than the taste. It’s about the people, the environment and all the components that contribute to making the meal what it is.

Get the perspective of those who live in a place but also the perspective of those who visit that place. Sometimes there are different intentions between locals and visitors, so try to get an informed mix of the two.

Know that authenticity isn’t always delicious, so in your search for the “authentic experience,” understand that it doesn’t always guarantee the best tasting meal, but it will likely be a memorable one.

Follow the crowds (selectively). It’s something I once shared with Travel + Leisure and still stand by: follow the locals because they often know where the good food can be found.

Ask friends who have given great recommendations before. I like recommendations, but I’ll be honest, not everyone has good ones, so I often will ask people who have pointed me in the right direction before, whether it’s with food or anything else. If they don’t know, they may know someone who knows. In other words, I trust their opinion.

Do some research beforehand but take what you read with a grain of salt and make your own assessment when you’re actually in the place you’re visiting.

Don’t rely on just one of your senses to make a decision about whether you’ll eat something or not. Sometimes the best food doesn’t look great, but the dish could end up being one of the best you’ve ever tried. Or, sometimes you may sniff something and decide the smell doesn’t agree with you so you’ll pass on tasting the dish. I say go for it, because you may end up loving it.

Keep an open mind about what you’re eating, unless you have specific dietary restrictions.

Know that sometimes you’ll strike out and sometimes you’ll hit a home run when it comes to food. Yes, that’s a baseball analogy on my blog — likely the first and last time you’ll ever see me mention baseball, so enjoy it while you can.

Belluci’s, Manuka – trying the lunch special!

Standard

Belluci’s is one of the best spots for a weekday lunch in Woden, and so Belluci’s Manuka has long been on the wishlist.

It has a prime and inviting location on the corner of Franklin and Furneax Streets. Is also just across from the medical centre where parking is nearly always easy (and very reasonable), even during business hours.

img_0016 img_4424 img_0034 img_4425

Like Woden, Manuka Belluci’s offers a great lunch special that includes a glass of wine, beer or soft drink for $19.95.

img_4422 img_0024

The menu in Manuka is familiar but refreshingly different with some of the favourite pizzas and pastas, but also two different lovely salads (salt baked salmon or pulled lamb), a delicious sounding pulled pork burger, a pizza with creamed taleggio, buffalo mozzarella & corella pears and a great looking pappardelle with beef shin and tomato ragu.

The salt baked salmon with quinoa, radicchio, asparagus, cherry tomatoes & orange is excellent. The dressing is quite heavy so best to order it on the side.

img_0019 img_0033

The chicken risotto with pancetta, button mushrooms & broad beans is similar to Woden’s but a little lighter and fresher.
It’s still quite a heavy dish and best shared with a salad and a friend.

Belluci’s is also very versatile, providing takeaway containers if you’d like to take some with you and allowing BYO wine at $5 per person corkage and $2 per person cakaege. There’s also a 25% discount for holders of the Canberra Entertainment Book (including the lunch special).

Pho Phu Quoc really does have Canberra’s best Vietnamese food. And it’s such great value.

Rice is $2 per person, corkage $6 per bottle, there’s a 25% discount for Canberra Entertainment Card holders and serve sizes are large and plenty for two people.

One of the best dishes is the Bird’s Nest Seafood $18.90 (also good with chicken $16.90 and I’m sure Vegetarian style $13.90).

Open everyday for lunch and dinner!
