Canberra Cafe: Muse, Kingston

Standard

On my wishlist…thanks Bec!

Bec's avatarinexplicable wanderlust

muse canberra cafe

Ever since they opened their doors in August, I’ve been very keen to try the new part-cafe, part-wine bar, part-book store located at the East Hotel in Kingston – Muse.

Despite my best efforts, I hadn’t quite made it there until last weekend when Steve and I went out for a sibling catch up date. There was a short wait for a table when we arrived, but that didn’t matter. We ordered coffees and had just enough time to look through the book store and take cute photos of each other.

The entire menu was pretty tempting, but I couldn’t go past the “French Breakfast” – goats cheese, baguette, butter and jam, a choice of pastry, freshly squeezed orange juice and a little coffee. I went for the chocolate croissant as my pastry and was officially in French breakfast heaven. This is the perfect choice for people who like…

Dream Cuisine, Fyshwick – a passion for pastry!

Standard

Dream Cuisine is a patisserie with purpose! Owen’s ‘Dream’ is to create the finest laminated pastry and perfect macarons.

Not bound by the rules of traditional pastry cooking, Owen encourages his team to explore new ideas, take risks and experiment with different butters and flours to achieve the very best results. (They even source their butter from Naomi in Myrtleford, Victoria who studied butter making in Europe!)

Along with his mum and business partner, Marilyn, Owen has successfully taken their vision to the Hamlet (Little Dreams), Old Bus Depot Markets and the Capital Region Farmer’s Market.

While the Fyshwick location may not be as convenient as more central spots, it gives the team the space they need to work their magic, and is so worth the trip! (The Lavender macaron is amazing!).

Cozy and cute, Grace and Annie make you feel right at home.

The coffee is excellent and there’s much fun to share as you select a treat from the beautiful display.

This visit to Dream Cuisine was hosted by Owen and the team for the Canberra Food Bloggers.

Taste of Bangladesh, Manuka – an easy dinner party take-away option!

Standard

While dining out is good fun, there is something lovely about inviting friends to your home for dinner. Its more relaxed and easier to mingle and meet new people. At home, an open fire in winter or an atmospheric terrace on a summer evening can set the scene for a great night.

IMG_1002

However hosting a dinner party for a larger group can seem very daunting if you’re busy.

But wouldn’t it be great if you could outsource most of the work, without it costing the high price of professional catering.

Taste of Bangladesh offers a very useful take-away family pack that’s perfect for this purpose. Being the lovely, flexible couple that they are, Shafique and Fahana are also happy to work with you on some reasonable swaps to cater for exactly what you need.

image

If you add your own simple salad of cucumber and tomato, cook your own rice and serve your own dessert, then one family pack for $71 can serve up to eight people.

IMG_1046 IMG_1054 IMG_1044

If you don’t live too far away they can even deliver it not to your door for $3 extra.

Start by setting an inviting table and perhaps adding some incense and Indian music!

IMG_1041IMG_1043 IMG_1042

Set out some wine, water and juice and a few nibbles for mingling.

IMG_1045

The Taste of Bangladesh family pack includes 8 entree pieces, four onion bhaji and four chicken tikka, but you can ask Shafique to just include 8 onion bhaji.

IMG_1051

The onion bhaji come with tamarind and mint chutneys and Shafique even includes some complimentary pappadoms!

IMG_1049 IMG_1048

Serve the chutneys and bhaji for entree using your own serving dishes.

IMG_1050 IMG_1053

IMG_1004

By cooking your own rice instead of including it in the order, you can have plenty on hand. Also, if you don’t take the rice, you can ask to upgrade the 4 plain naan to the more tasty cheese and spinach naan instead.

IMG_1057 IMG_1056

Asking Shafique to cut the naan into quarters makes it easier for sharing.

Serve the raita and the mains in your own dishes too.

IMG_1052-0

Some of the four set mains ( beef vindaloo, butter chicken, lamb saag and minja handi (a cheese and vegetable dish)) be swapped, if you choose similarly priced dishes.

If you have more than 6-8 people you might want to order two or more family packs. If you do it can be handy to get more of the same dish, for example three Chicken Dum Murfh, three Fish Bengali and two palak Paneer work well.

IMG_1055

Finish with a simple dessert of your own, made ahead of time or even some gourmet icecream served in glassware and garnished with a few frozen berries.

IMG_0995 IMG_1003

Finish with tea and coffee and a chocolate to round it all off.

IMG_1058

For a small amount of planning and organisation and some big (but not too pricey) help from Taste of Bangladesh you can add your own special touches to a delicious Indian feast and create a night to remember!

Ivy and the Fox, Acton – gorgeous and delicious

Standard

The relatively new Ivy and the Fox must have the most lovely brunch setting in Canberra during the good weather.IMG_1710IMG_1709

Located in Old Canberra House, Lennox Crossing near the National Museum, the garden setting is warm and welcoming.

IMG_1693 IMG_1694

The shaded tables on the lush lawn are ideal for relaxed sharing of food with good friends and family with a great view to Lake Burley Griffen.

IMG_1698 IMG_1730

Alex has brought the magic of Fox and Bow in Farrer, to the former Ivy Cafe and it’s a perfect match.

IMG_1697
Dishes start from $6 for sourdough or fruit toast with butter and jam and there are add ons to custom design your perfect portion.

IMG_1715

IMG_1719

Ordering the toast can also be a useful addition to make it easier to share with a more substantial breakfast dish like Señorita Fox that has two poached eggs, smoked salmon, haloumi and feta on sourdough $20.90

IMG_1722 IMG_1727
There are banquet options starting at $29 per person which are a good way to try a range of dishes on the menu, but you could also create your own sharing menu by ordering one each of the very delicious sounding My Little Pecan salad, The Godfather fish and chips, Cruebanos sandwich and The Rocket Man croquettes between four.

IMG_1713

Serving the all day brunch 8am – 4pm seven days, the kitchen closes at 3pm.

Licensed but not BYO, there’s also a good range of baked treats to enjoy (or share) with coffee.

IMG_1703 IMG_1731
It’s good to book, but if it’s busy, extra tables can be moved out onto the lawn. The most popular time is 10-12 Sundays.
If the weather is not so great it’s also cosy inside.

IMG_1700 IMG_1701 IMG_1705
Parking can be tricky during the week but it may be possible to park at the museum and walk over.

IMG_1632 IMG_1611

Like the Hamlet and Westside its fun to head with a group, take a sharp knife and grab a selection of foods to share and try.

The only thing  is that it’s easy to forget how your wallet is going…and when you add on the price of the ticket..it can get quite costly if you need to watch your budget.

Bollywood Dimensions, Braddon – a good shared menu for under $15 with corkage)

Standard

The plan to share dishes at Bollywood Dimensions works.

The two dals are full flavoured and rival the chicken and lamb dishes. Ordered in generous side sizes ($8.90) they add variety to the meal without increasing the price.

IMG_1134

The Kheema (lamb stuffed) Naan is better than the Paneer Naan  and one serve of rice is plenty for two people.

Do ask for mild spice level to cater for different tastes as even this is quite spicy.

There’s a 25% Entertainment Book discount of the food and corkage ($5 per bottle) and more than one voucher can be used (although there’s certain conditions).

The restaurant is very flexible and is happy to work with the shared menu.

IMG_1135

While the decor is mid range when dining with a group the atmosphere can be quite festive.

IMG_1136

A recommended menu for groups of four people under $15 per person with the discount ($20 without) is….

2 serves steamed basmati rice $3 per serve.
1 serve Awesome Butter Chicken (Mild) $18.50 Boneless Chicken pieces cooked in Tandoor and finished in a creamy butter and tomato sauce. A creamy and fairly mild dish.
1 serve Marvelous Lamb Pasanda – a chef’s special $18.90 lamb marinated overnight to ensure that the meat is tender and full of flavour.
1 serve Mesquite Dal Makhani $8.90
A rich, creamy dal preparation with lentils and red kidney beans cooked with an aromatic combination of spices.
1 serve Yellow Dal Tadka $8.90
2 x Kheema Naan $4.50 (cut into 1/4)
About $19 per person (or $14 with a Canberra Entertainment Book discount) including BYO Corkage $5 per bottle
