Joseph Swan Deli, Macauley Rd, Kensington, Vic

Standard

The Joseph Swan Deli is a new addition to the Macauley Road eateries and an interesting little nook to explore.

imageimage

image image

Staff are extremely welcoming and accommodating. The feel is casual and relaxed and indeed the deli is aiming to become a community hub for locals. To help this along, it offers filtered coffee for $2.50 with free refills, to go with the blackboard breakfast and lunch specials that include a homemade pie, soup and roll as well as a range of gourmet sandwiches.

image image
The community feel is also reflected in the wooden sculpture wall made from local builds and representing the diversity in the community.

image

The sweet treats and breads also look delicious and there’s both communal and outdoor seating.

image image
A new venture well worth supporting.
Open Monday to Friday 8-6pm, Saturday 8-5pm and Sunday 8-4pm.

Footscray Fresh Food Markets, Victoria

Standard

If you are staying west of the city in Melbourne, it’s well worth heading to Footscray to explore the fresh food market.

The market particularly reflects the style of the local Vietnamese population but it’s a favourite across a range of cultures. It’s a whole sense experience – colours, tastes, smells.

image image imageimage

imageimage image image image image

There’s also plenty of opportunity to stop for a snacker meal and enjoy some great Vietnamese or Philippino food.

Not far from the market, the world’s cuisines are on your doorstep at a whole list of cheap and excellent eateries.

One of the best is Lalibela Ethiopian Restaurant.

All a bit of fun to try, but the flood is quite touristy and possibly more cafeteria than cafe.

Kakulas Brothers, Perth

Kakulas Brothers, wholesalers, retailers and importers, at 183 William Street, Northbridge, should not be missed by food loving visitors to Perth.

Established in 1929, the Kakalas family has an interesting story.

The family is originally from the island of Kastellorizo which is 2km from the coast of Turkey and 75 km east of the Greek Island of Rhodes.

Their store reflects their origins, but also, like Perth itself, the rest of the world is not far away. Kakulas Brothers stocks products to help you create global cuisines.

Part delicatessen, part spice market, part specialty store, it’s a delight to explore.

Spices especially are cheap, fresh and plentiful.
And do make sure you go away with a coffee.

But it’s greatest assets are the house made condiments – the chutney and cherry jam is just so delicious. Once you experience it you just have to go back for more.

Coal Loader Cafe, Ball’s Head, Waverton, Sydney

Standard

Coal Loader Cafe has a gorgeous outlook over the beautiful waterways and harbour of Sydney.

image image

It’s the perfect spot for a casual lunch or just a glass of wine and a nibble.

imageimage

Well priced, with generous serve sizes, it’s great value.

The Haloumi and Hummous is lovely with Lime and can easily be shared $11.

image

Wine starts at $6.50 for a large 187ml serve, which although is is uniquely served in it’s own little bottle which can be a bit surprising, it’s actually a great idea if you don’t end up wanting to drink all of it at once (just hang on to the top).

image

The spinach and cheese filled pastry $14 looked fantastic too.

Service and hospitality is warm, friendly and unpretentious.

A newcomer to the area, it’s certain to be a popular favourite with locals.

2015/02/img_4830-0.jpg2015/02/img_1459.jpg

Upstairs is a more upmarket dining option (mains around $24, corkage $10) which is lovely, but it’s also good to have an equally nice, more relaxed and less expensive option, especially if dining with kids.
Downstairs you can grab a table from 6pm to about 8pm (it finishes earlier if it’s  busy) and order take away which includes..
…two yummy pieces of fish with chips for $12.50…
2015/02/img_1475.jpg
…very nice calamari (although not as good value as the fish and chips) for $10…
IMG_1483
….and a Greek salad for $8.
IMG_1474
…downstairs BYO is $6 per bottle and glasses are provided.
2015/02/img_1469.jpg
Prices are similar to Obriens Boatshed next door, although Obriens has a wider menu, ice creams for dessert and doesn’t charge corkage (take your own glasses though). Obriens is also open earlier, from 7am but also closes about 8pm.
IMG_1505 IMG_1508
Neither spot is book able so go early if it’s a busy time at the coast.
