The Tree House, North Sydney

Standard

I know I’ve mentioned the Tree House before, but it truly is a great ‘go to’ spot if you need a place for coffee, brunch or lunch or just somewhere to camp and do some work before a meeting.

There’s plenty of cozy, quiet nooks…..

….great coffee…

….chai….

…..fruit toast $6…

…..bathrooms

Staff are endlessly flexible, friendly and accommodating.

Looking around, it seems it’s a favourite for work coffee meetings with many.

The North End Cafe, Maroubra

Standard

We didn’t quite have time to enjoy a spread like Not Quite Nigella,  but the North End Cafe was a cute and friendly spot to enjoy a quick lunch in Maroubra.

O
It’s not on the beach, but still has a beachside vibe.

Serving all day breakfast like simple poached eggs on rye $9.50….

….or all day lunch like the chicken breast burger $17…

…it’s a small but versatile menu for a light meal.

Din Tai Fung, North Sydney – a second look

Standard

I just had to go back for more dumplings at Din Tai Fung.

This time I had the Chinese tea $1 with free refills, an excellent idea.

I also tried the Seafood Jiao Zi $7.80…

…but sadly they weren’t quite as good as the Shrimp and pork Jiao zi $9.80 or steamed pork dumplings xiao long Bao $5.80

I also ordered the Steamed mini bun with red bean – $1.90

…but again, it wasn’t as good as the savoury pork bun.

The Green bean with minced pork and dried shrimp $11.80 looked pretty good as a share dish…for another time perhaps.

Faheem’s Fast Food, Enmore Road – the real deal!

The menu is extensive and includes options like….

Fantastic!! soft naan from $2.50

Garlic naan $3

Rice larger serve like this is $3

Yogurt mint sauce $1.50

Two people can eat for $20.

There’s also the option of three veg curries and rice $10.

I will have to go back!

The Urban, Newtown, a great base to explore Enmore Road Eateries!

Standard

I would never have found this great spot on my own but it was recommended by a friend.

The Urban won’t fit everyone’s preference ….but I loved it!

It’s close to the city…just a short 6 minute train ride from Central on the inner west line.

img_2031

It’s just near Newtown Station, easy 2 minute walk.

It’s only $109 per room on the website….

img_2019

….and if you book on line the mini bar is free.

img_2087 img_2021

Pastries and fruit are available all day and so breakfast is included.

The room has a kitchenette so you can cater easily..

img_2006

…but why do that when it’s surrounded by great places to eat on Enmore Road!

The Urban started life as an RSL Club and front the road it looks quirky but not fancy.

img_2113

The foyer is pretty plain and practical.

img_1952

But then you realise that staff at reception are really friendly, approachable and helpful.

And you notice the pastries, coffee and fruit you can help yourself to anytime.

img_1949 img_1945

I’d booked a double room, but was upgraded to a king bed (nice!).

img_2005

Room 405 was great, facing the side street Station Street not the main road. Once the windows  were closed it was especially quiet.

img_1998

The room was simple and basic but it was the five star touches that really impressed like the full toiletries….

img_2088

….large bathroom and shower ( excellent)….

img_2015 img_2011

….pod coffee machine and classy teabags.

img_2029 img_2098

The bed was very comfortable, heating was cozy.

img_2004

And did I mention that free minibar?

img_2027 img_2032

If you don’t want to go far the Hakiki icecream shop is across the road…

img_2073

..as is The Stinking Bishops with an interesting menu.

A bit further along is La Ricetta ( open Monday’s) Great Aunty Three (Vietnamese) and Faheems Fast food (Indian) ( open Mondays).

img_2036

The Tandoori Hut has a great Biriyani recommended by The Urban reception.

Hartsyard, Osteria di Russo and Russo and Bloodwood are pricier spots nearby.

There’s the historic iconic Enmore Theatre near by and some interesting sounding markets on the weekend.

img_2118

At breakfast time there were some amazing croissants and pastries on offer – maybe from the wonderful smelling bakery over the road.

img_2105 img_2110

And I’m there’s a whole lot more to discover on King Street!

img_2122

Parking is $40

Wifi is free and excellent!

The Q Manhattan, Quest Albury

Standard

There’s not many eateries open on a Monday night in the Albury CBD.

However,  the Manhattan, a tapas bar at the bottom of the Quest Hotel in Albury is a good spot to choose.

The setting and service is relaxed.

Wine by the glass is well priced and generous. The wine list includes a range of local wines.

The tapas are also good and include garlic and rosemary marinated Lamb strips with tzatziki, pita bread, feta and tomato salad $18…( my favourite)

….baked mushrooms with goats cheese, thyme and garlic and crumb $16…

…and duck lettuce cups with Asian slaw and sesame and lime dressing $17 ( perhaps my least favourite of the three).

Hakiki Turkish Icecream, Enmore Road – Delicious!

Standard

Hakiki Turkish Icecream is right across Enmore Road from the Urban.

While The Cow and the Moon up the road is the prize winner…

img_2066 img_2053

…this is the more interesting and delicious option.
The Turkish tea is excellent ……

…..as is the Turkish delight $1 each.

The baklava was excellent and the pistachio, all was great.

img_2073-2

And I’d love to try the baklava pasties next time too.

Cottage Point Inn, Sydney @cottagepointinn @guillaume_zika

Standard

Cottage Point Inn is perfect as the centrepiece for creating a wonderful day’s event – a special lunch in Sydney’s north.

img_1738 img_4314

Overlooking the Cowen Waters in Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, this delightful venue began its life as a boat house, general store and post office.

img_4312 img_4313

Guests arrive by road, water or air!

img_1733 img_4318

They are beautifully cared for by Guillaume Zika – Executive Chef …..

img_4333 img_4329

Jim Sanders – Head Sommelier……

img_4322

…and excellent waitstaff like Amando

img_4319

We began with Jim’s recommendation of a lovely Sangria made with elderflower liqueur, port and juice of ruby grapefruit and poorman’s orange.

img_1776

This was served with warm bread with a faint lemon flavour and stylishly served butter….

img_1780

We were very tempted by the  the degustation menu, but decided instead to share a selection from each course.

We chose entrees of Gippsland Veal Rump Tartare $32 – Seasoned with Oyster & Lemon Dressing, Tarragon, Caper Crackers

img_4323

……and the Line Caught Snapper $34 Served Raw, Persimmon Vierge, Finger Lime & Basil

img_1801

…and Jim suggested an unusual Argentinian White Fantasia that is usually paired in the degustation with the veal tartare.

img_4324

…But before the entrees arrived we were surprised with a complimentary appetito of refreshingly crisp and tasty Pear with crème fraîche and pastry shell with a creamy pumpkin purée and parmesan

img_4320 img_4321

And after we’d enjoyed our entrees we were again surprised with another entree dish of the Moreton Bay Bug Citrus & Fennel, Lemon Hollandaise, usually $38, which turned out to be my favourite entree ( my second pick would be the veal tartare).

img_4326

The mains we decided on were the Port Lincoln Spanish Mackerel Braised Endive with Capers & Smoked Parmesan, Noilly Prat Sauce $45…

img_1827

….and the New Zealand Blue Eye Trevella with Confit young onion, sorrel puree, marjoram and clams $46..

img_4327

Both were lovely and, like many others before us, we really did enjoy the Lemon & Herb Dauphine Potatoes $10.50 to accompany them.

img_1832

Then another complimentary dish arrived – what must almost be a signature treat – of Roquefort cheese & green apple jelly with walnuts- perfect!

img_1843

We’d chosen for dessert the Mont Blanc Tartlet with Chestnut & Rum Cream, White Chocolate Ganache, Buttermilk Sorbet $19 – a real winner!

img_4330

But again were delightfully surprised with a second dessert of Yoghurt Vacherin Malfroys Gold Honey, Lemon Curd & Basil $19.

img_4331

This was a meringue shell filled with a lemon curd and nicely highlighted, unusually, by the basil. Gorgeous!

Coffee was the perfect way to finish, especially as by now it was getting late in the afternoon…..

img_4334

…..with a final unexpected accompaniment of aerated chocolate petit fours.

img_4171

This is not a meal to be rushed. It deserves plenty of time to enjoy the relaxed and peaceful setting, the attentiveness and passion of the hosts and the creative talent in the dishes.

img_1527 img_1634

The personality of Portenos, is what I remember most, or perhaps rather it’s the personality of the wait staff.

img_1607 img_1564

img_1566img_1548

Damien our sommelier chose an amazing Maldec blend that was rich and delicious.

img_1583img_1588

Wait staff are almost choreographed as they snap into action as the first guests arrive at the 6pm sitting.

img_1537 img_1540

Their attention to detail and to guest comfort is a stand out.

img_1532 img_1637

But the food is equally impressive.

img_1534

A perfect accompaniment as the desert wine was…

img_4273

…and it was a truly special treat to see Damien’s pride in Poretenos wine cellar, with a large range of lovingly selected wines….and ( I noted for later) plenty of delicious Malbecs!

img_1620

Truly a special and memorable Argentinian themed restaurant, well deserving of its place in Australia’s top 100 restaurants.

Din Tai Fung, Sydney  – the standard by which all dumplings are measured!

Standard

People who know, always seem to tell me that Din Tai Fung’s dumplings are the very best…and having now experienced them for myself, I absolutely agree.

Din Tai Fung is not fancy, it’s more ‘food court’….but it’s fun.

And fortunately there’s several Din Tai Fungs spread around Syndey, in Star City, Westfied on Pitt Street, World Square on George Street and Blue Street/Millet Street in Greenwood Plaza attached to North Sydney Station.
The dumplings have a delicate pastry, perfectly cooked with just the right amount of stock captured inside and a wonderfully flavoursome filling.

The Shrimp and Pork ( 4 for $6.80) are especially lovely …..

…..but the steamed pork dumpling Xiao Long Bao (4 for $5.80) are also good.

I didn’t enjoy the Pork Buns $2.80 quite as good as the dumplings but they are good to round out a light lunch.
