Baby Brodchicken $9 with a side of chips $2.50

My favourite is the Baby Brodsalmon $9 with blue cheese added. It is divine.

BYO wine. Corkage is $7.50 per bottle.

However Brodburger doesn’t take bookings and has long tables that are shared with other groups. Good to get there early.

You can also phone and pre-order and any burger can be made into a brod mama burger which are made with a well done beef pattie, egg free aioli, and your choice of Swiss or cheddar cheese.”

It’s best in the good weather when you can sit outside and enjoy a lovely Canberra summer evening. You can even take your burger and some wine and head to the lake. In winter it can be a bit chilly, even inside.

Parlour Wine Room – New Acton, Canberra – an excellent lunch spot

Standard

Inspired by Her Canberra‘s review it was great to try the Parlour Wine Room in New Acton recently.

Refurbished after the fire in 2011, it is beautifully furnished in period style and I’m told, still retains some of it’s old characteristic atmosphere.

The $16 lunch special (Tuesday to Sunday) (+ 10% surcharge on Sundays), is excellent value and includes a generous serve of house wine ( the shiraz was excellent) and a slice of sourdough bread and olive oil.

The Battered Calamari with chipotie aioli and pickled cucumber was our best dish followed by the Spanish beef and potato stew (once with beef and another time with pulled pork). Next best was the Pappardelle pasta with pork belly and sofrito and lastly the Fried free range eggs with piquillio peppers and jamon.

Sutton Forrest Estate Wines – the best stop for coffee/lunch on the way to Sydney

 Sutton Forest Estate Wines

A real gem on the Hume Highway.

This Winery and Cafe is a great find and the only real alternative to roadhouses and quick service restaurants on the left hand side of the highway. Helpfully, it is also midway between Canberra and Sydney. (On the right hand side, almost opposite, Sutton Forest Estate Wines, is Eling Forrest Winery, also good for a stop when heading back from Sydney on the other side of the highway. However, it gets much busier than Sutton Forrest winery and it can be worth crossing over the overpass for quicker service and a quieter spot.

Sutton Forest Estate Wines can be a bit tricky to find the first time. Head up to McDonald’s but drive past the drive through entrance and keep going, almost as if you are getting back on to the Hume highway, but take the last exit on the left down a small road. There are usually signs out to indicate the right way to go.

The turn off to the winery from McDonalds    Heading back the other way to get back on to the highway

Sutton Forrest Estate winery and cafe is only open on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays 9-5pm (sometimes a bit earlier).

Nic and his wife Santina are lovely, They make great coffee and wonderful focaccias with Santina’s home roasted vegetables,  and salami or ham.

IMG_2631IMG_4069

They also have Alpine gelato, torte delle nonna, jam tart (homemade) , minestrone soup and a wonderful looking antipasti platter for two or more ($19) which I’m told comes with plenty of bread and would be great with a bottle of their own wine ($20-$27 per bottle, also available by the glass). (I suspect a platter for two could be enough for more than two.)

IMG_9180 IMG_9183

Torte della nonna  $9

While you’re waiting for Santina to cook your focaccia,  you can taste some of the wines on offer.

IMG_4079IMG_4174

On sunny days it’s nice to sit outside and the view of the vineyards is terrific.

IMG_4062IMG_4082

On cold or rainy days the open fire inside is gorgeous.

For me, no trip to Sydney is complete without a stop here.

Great sharing plates around Canberra

Standard

Sharing plates and platters

Sharing plates and platters can really be your friend. They offer couples and groups the chance to try a larger range of taste experiences in smaller amounts rather than just being limited to one or two dishes, that may or may not be so good.

They are often also full of interesting and beautifully presented foods. A treat for all the senses. These can be ordered per person/two people and extra breads or crackers are usually available if you need them.

Some around Canberra include……

Coffees are more like mini meals than you think!

Standard

IMG_3366

It’s so easy to think of milk based coffees like lattes, cappuccino and flat whites as just drinks that don’t really count towards your kilojoules.

But when you realise that even the smallest sizes have around the same kilojoules as a slice of bread, medium potato, small yogurt or a piece of fresh fruit, it becomes clear that they are really more like a mid-meal.

A small milk-based coffee even a skim one, has similar kilojoules to a small yogurt

A small milk-based coffee even a skim one, has similar kilojoules to a small yogurt

And then if you order a medium sized coffee, it’s one and a half times more and a large is double.

IMG_3359

A large milky coffee has the kilojoules of two pieces of fruit or two small yogurts….

So it might make you re-think about whether to add a coffee to your morning or afternoon tea snack, or to just have it instead?

Piccolo lattes can be a good alternative. They still give you the coffee, but not so much milk and far fewer kilojoules.

Treehouse Lunch Specials

Great review from cbrfoodie.org!

Three #Canberra Beanies smaller-beanie smaller-beanie smaller-beanie

The Treehouse on Northbourne Avenue (near London Circuit in the Sydney Building) is better known as a bar than one of Canberra’s hidden affordable eats. The food here is also a good example of why I prefer to say “affordable eats” rather than “cheap eats”. Although the price of their lunch specials is “cheap” the quality is far better than one would expect for a $9 meal.

Here’s the menu for the lunch specials, which only run Wednesday to Friday.

treehouse3

There are other specials that run during different days and times of the week.

On my first trip I did ask for the braised osso bucco as recommended by my friend Eileen (@TheFoodAvenue) however I had arrived a bit late in the lunch period and they had sold out. Instead I ordered the char-grilled calamari, and I was not disappointed!
