Pistachios, Torrens – perfectly portioned!

Standard

Pistachios Dining Rooms at the Torrens shops still have the best portion sizes I’ve ever had!

The wonderful Tasting Plate of three Entrées $19 and Tasting Plate of four Desserts $19 are still on the menu.

It’s my perfect way to enjoy seven different dishes and still leave feeling comfortable.

This week the Entrees were lovely and featured the ….
Seared Scallops, Black Sesame Seed, Rice Noodle, Yuzu, Avocado, Chilli (my favourite)

Goat’s Cheese Ravioli, Peas, Sage, White Truffle Oil, Smoked Bacon

Red Wine , Braised Lamb Shank Soup, Roast Root Vegetable

img_6036

The four desserts were also very excellent ..

Vanilla Brûlée, Pistachio, Almond Biscotti

Chocolate and Hazelnut Blondie,
Dark Chocolate Mousse, Tia Maria Sauce

Apple, Blackberry Compote, Rolled Oat Crumble, Vanilla Ice cream, Caramel Sauce

Maha Sponge, Lemon Curd, Black Sesame, Cream Cheese, Chocolate ( my favourite)

img_6039

It’s great value but there’s more…

BYO corkage is $7 per bottle.

Pistachios and delicious bread are complimentary.

img_6031

If you have the Canberra Entertainment Card there’s also a 25% discount.

While it’s true that the ambiance is a little faded and with very little effort Pistachios could reinvent itself into a new young thing, it remains worthy of Canberra fine dining.

It’s soft furnishings make it excellent for conversation and parking is easy.

Yogi’s Kitchen – warm hospitality and a great thali in Barton

Standard

Yogi’s Kitchen opened up in Barton in July and clearly it’s a popular spot for nearby workers on a weekday.

img_5842

It was hard to pick from the range of great lunch options – but really, it’s a no brainer the $15 Lunch Thali is the best!

img_5857

With a choice of two curries, it came with rice, naan, pickle, raita, pappadom and a gulab jaman – perfect on a wet rainy day.

img_5825

But the real stand out for me was the service. Nothing was too much trouble. There were no free tables, but I still felt welcomed and like a special guest as I waited.

As tables became free, the best one was worked out for us. The best thali combo was offered with the flexibility to add in a (more expensive) cheese and garlic naan, and then finally…

img_5852

…a whole selection of take home containers were provided to pack the remaining delicious flavours for later.

Such hospitality is hard to resist.

But I’m not the only one, so next time I’m going to book.

img_5873

img_5881 img_5883

img_5895

…and lovely beef steak with radicchio salad.

img_5900

The house red is good value at $45 for 1 Litre (or $8 per glass).

La Cantina, Narrabundah – excellent food!

Standard

Narrabundah is overflowing with good restaurants – XO, D’Browes and…La Cantina.

On a Friday night La Cantina’s busy with couples and groups.

The pastas are popular – the review favourites are the Duck Ravioli and Gnocchi.

It’s easy to see why La Cantina attracts so many fans. The setting is stylish but cozy, lighting is relaxed and warm and the hosts are welcoming.

img_5305

But I think the real standout is the food – it really is very good.

The Nanatta fritti $14 Crispy, baby white bait with lemon & aioli don’t look amazing, but they are.

img_5307

The Beetroot Carpaccio $16 with gorgonzola, green beans candied walnuts & red wine vinaigrette is good too.

img_5316

The  Whole Spatchcock flattened, partially de-boned & roasted, served with roast potatoes & spicy lemon vinaigrette $35 has excellent flavours….

img_5322

…and is probably only just ahead of the Grain-fed Hunter Valley eye fillet, Paris mash, baby carrots & porcini jus $36.

img_5317

The desserts are wonderful…

Panna Cotta $5 Vanilla & orange infused panna cotta, red wine poached pear & crispy house made honeycomb

img_5331

And a delcious flourless chocolate torte with vanilla bean gelato and orange and hazelnut soil $15

img_5326

But the Cheesecake al Limone $15 Classic lemon cheesecake, with raspberry coulis & raspberry sorbet also looked like a good choice.

And there was also a Rosemary & Sea Salt Focaccia with aged balsamic & extra virgin olive oil $12 at another table that looked like a great way a meal to start too – a large and delicious serve, enough for two.

The only tricky part of dining at La Cantina would be deciding what to have, as the food is all so lovely.

BYO wine is $5 per person – which is helpful for budgeting.

Daana, Curtin – newly opened this week!

Standard

Daana, has a new home!

This week Sanjay and Sunita celebrated their re-opening in their new Curtin home, previously occupied by Silver Fox and Delissio.

img_5948

There’s a wonderful new menu full of regional specialties.

New dishes like Street Chaat – Dahi Vada $12 (a dish served cold)…

img_5960

…and a lovely traditional Kerala dessert Kei Paysam of rice cooked with ghee and jaggary, garnished with dried fruit and cashews $10.

img_5965

But there’s still  old favourites  like Idli with Sambar and coconut and tomato chutneys $12..

img_5963

…and those great prices that we love!

There are just so many new dishes to try – Bombay specials, Southern Delights, Daana Specials, Thalis, weekend specials and more, that it will take many trips to work through them all. I think I’ll just need to gather a group and order a bunch to share.

Next on my wishlist is the Kati Rolls, Samosa Chaat, Dosa and Kulfi Fulooda.

BYO wine is $6 a bottle and you can be relaxed and cozy inside or make the most of the sunshine outside.

Avenue C Wine Co. Campbell- How good is this!

Standard

If I was to design the perfect spot for a drink – it would be walking distance, have cozy indoor and sunset outdoor seating, a relaxed but stylish ambiance, good small share plate and I could buy a bottle of wine at a wholesale price to open – it would be Avenue C Wine Co!

Rachel and Peter are proud of their wines, it’s their passion and they want their guests to enjoy them too.

img_5922

So that’s why they offer wine by the glass …..

img_5924

….or by the bottle, with wholesale prices clearly marked and starting at around $23….

img_1529

…and often by the tasting too…

img_5916

This week Jane from Clonakilla was sharing their lovely Semillon Savignon Blanc, Viognier Nouveau, and my favourites… a 2015 Hilltops Shiraz and O’Riada Shiraz.

img_1527

Sign up to the Avenue C Wine Co. newsletter to find out what’s on when.

To accompany the wine, City News’ Wendy Johnston recommends Avenue C’s Grilled Haloumi with honey, lemon and oregano $14, Chicken liver parfait with toasted brioche $18 and the Rabbit terrine with toasted sourdough $19. On my wishlist!

Open from 10am till 11pm 7 days a week.

The Pedlar, Campbell – a first look at brunch

Standard

It’s great to see the Pedlar Cafe so popular! On Saturday morning it was buzzing with couples and families!

The Crunchy Granola $12, Big Breakfast $19 and Roasted Swiss Brown Mushrooms $16 going past all looked excellent but it was hard to resist the Coconut Crusted French Toast $17. It sounded so good with white chocolate mascarpone, berry compote, maple syrup and matcha dust and looked so pretty!

img_5352

We also ordered the Shashuka Baked Eggs $18, rich and tasty with the sourdough.

img_5353

But the Pedlar’s greatest asset has to be it’s friendliness and warm welcome.

Festival of India in Oz, Canberra

Standard

Last Saturday, the Canberra Theatre Forecourt was host to Gilles Chuyen, Bollywood dance teacher, as he lead a crowd of enthusiastic Canberrans, eager to learn a few fun dances.

fullsizerender

The free Bollywood Workshop was part of the Festival of India in Australia.

Indian street food vendors like Shareb, Lavina and Preem, from Chilli Grill Chai in the Hamlet, Braddon…

img_1365 img_5505

….offered hungry dancers classic delicacies like a wonderful Butter Chicken…

img_1377

…and their Samosa Chat $10 (also available at the Hamlet).

img_1381

I was very pleased to learn that Chilli Grill Chai has a permanent home on Lonsdale Street as they have such great food. I have a return visit on my wishlist!

And do look out for the other free Festival of India Canberra event on the afternoons of 2nd and 3rd October – the Pung Cholom in Commonwealth Park.

A wonderful Bangladeshi Cuisine Cooking Circle Canberra at Taste of Bangladesh, Manuka

Standard

Last Saturday Shafique and Farhana hosted Cooking Circles Canberra to an amazing introduction to Bangladeshi cuisine at their Manuka restaurant, Taste of Bangladesh.

img_5452 img_5457

They lead thirty of us through the delicate flavours of Chicken Dum Biriyani, fragrant with spices of Cumin, Star Anise, Chilli, Cinnamon, Cardamom, Clove and Mace…

img_5444

…along with ginger and garlic, ghee, fried  onions.

img_5445

The spices were ground and mixed with yogurt to marinate the chicken which was then cooked..

img_5414

…before being layed with the separately cooked rice for the final cooking, that allows the flavours to penetrate layers.

img_5609img_1271

While the Dum Biriyani was cooking, Shafique showed us how to prepare the wonderfully delicious classic – Gulab Jaman.

img_1166img_1159

His shortcut method is to mix a dough using milk powder and baker’s flour (softened with cream) which is rolled into balls…

img_5462 img_5416

….and cooked in oil before being added to a sugar (and cinnamon stick) syrup.

img_5441

Farhana told us about the traditional (lengthy) method used in Bangladesh to prepare this dessert, using paneer. When a new baby is born into a family, the new parents send this special sweet to friends and neighbours.

img_1325

While we were waiting for the Dum Biriyani, Shafique also showed us an Eggplant Pakora (Beguni) entree.

img_1220

He first thinly sliced the eggplant…

img_5468

…then mixed it with spices – chilli, mace and garam marsala…

img_5485

…and then chickpea flour and water to coat it in batter before frying it.

img_5486img_5499

We were all so eager to enjoy this delicacy that no-one captured any photos whatsoever!

As the meal deliciously came together we chatted and enjoyed mango lassis and glasses of wine…

img_5514img_1285

…but when the Dum Biriyani was served, perfectly matched with yogurt raita, the flavours were wonderful to savour!

img_5596img_1315

And the Gulab Jaman was a perfect end to a excellent meal, with fine company and much pleasure for all the senses, discovering another lesser known world cuisine!
