A.Baker, New Acton – a first look at dinner

Standard

A. Baker has an enviable setting in the historic old Acton Hotel buildings, and opening onto established garden courtyards at both front and back.

Supporting local producers and even growing some produce themselves…

… A. Baker strives for excellence in it’s food and wine menus

….and this is reflected in the pride, confidence and welcome if the service staff.

Especially delicious are the pork belly, prune and tarragon canapés….

….but the south coast oysters with cucumber and citrus…

And the charred cauliflower with sesame and ponzu are also good.

It’s a good idea to order as a group and share a range of share plates and dishes.

This gives great variety in styles, flavours and textures.

Good choices include….

Starters…

…shared cured meats with A. Baker bread and olive oil ($25 for three)….

…..Shaw River buffalo mozzarella, black garlic, smoked walnuts and quinoa…

…….Braised Octopus, skordalia, baked panchetta, blood orange and almond…

Mains

Baked local mushrooms, Dutch cream gnocchi, kale, local primo sale…

Charred lamb neck, Harissa, bean, radish and sumac salad, smoked whipped ricotta…

And a lovely dessert is the Black sesame bavarois, strawberries, pink peppercorn meringue and sorrel.

A good choice for a special dinner, brunch or a coffee.

Italiano Vero, Glebe Park, Canberra City

Standard

Italiano Vero is a new family venture for Marco, Daria ….and chef Antonio.

Serving authentic Italian cuisine, with true Italian hospitality, it’s a cute and convenient little spot at the bottom of the Glebe Apartments ( where there’s also some easy parking available).

Open for breakfast and lunch 7:00am- 2:30pm Monday to Friday and dinner 6pm – 8:30pm Thursday to Saturday, they are also trying an Aperitivo from 4pm Saturdays, when they offer free specialities with any drink.

There’s a regular lunch menu that includes a nice homemade ravioli with smoked salmon in a pink sauce $21…

….and a barley salad with red onion, capsicum, carrots, celery and pomegranate dressing $14….

….but perhaps the best lunch combination would be to share one of the delicious looking pizzas ($15-$24) and a side salad $8…

…..along with generously sized and well priced (from $7) glasses of wine.

Bread is complimentary.

There’s also a more extensive dinner menu, a specials board and some baked items to go with some good coffee.

But perhaps the very best reason to visit is for the friendliness of the most welcome hosts!

Four Winds Vineyard, Murrumbateman

Standard

Canberra has some great wineries offering tastings and a few also have a short menu that you can use to create a child-friendly lunch with friends.

IMG_2036 IMG_2042

Four Winds Vineyard is one of these, offering a choice of four great $15 nine inch pizzas from their wood-fired pizza oven on weekends.

IMG_2037IMG_2038

IMG_2050 IMG_2051

They are served in some lovely grassy surroundings where plenty of room for children to run around safely in the summer.

IMG_2044 IMG_2045

In the winter the wood fire is a cozy inside spot but it may not be so good for young children.

IMG_2040 IMG_2046

It’s hard to know which pizza is the best…

IMG_2052

….but perhaps the BBQ Chicken Pizza is the most memorable with BBQ sauce, chicken, red onion, gorgonzola and cheese….

IMG_2055

….followed by the Potato Pizza with potato, onion, gorgonzola, rosemary and cheese….

IMG_2053

….then the Salami Pizza with tomato sauce, salami, black olives and cheese….

IMG_2054

….and finally the Caramelised Onion Pizza (the special of the month) with wilted baby spinach, caramelised onion, toasted pine nuts, balsamic vinegar and cheese.

IMG_2056

Do try the wines and perhaps purchase a glass to go with your pizzas.

IMG_2047 IMG_2043

Located very close to Murrumbateman, do make sure you leave plenty of time (40 mins) to travel out from Canberra.

IMG_2039 IMG_2041

Wine tasting: 10am – 5pm each weekend.

Wood-fired pizzas: 12-3pm each weekend.

IMG_1930IMG_0520

So Taste of Bangladesh upstairs in the Style Arcade in Manuka is a real gem.

IMG_1929
By ordering three dishes ($14 – $16.50), a raita ($3.50) two rice ($3 each) and two naan ($2.50 each) per 4-5 people, there’s a good range of flavours that’s perfect for sharing.

image image

….or bring along your own cake and cream ( or other dessert) to share for dessert.

Monster Kitchen and Bar, New Acton – the best place for coffee or a drink after the movies

Standard

If you are seeing a movie at the very lovely Palace Cinemas, do consider also visiting Monster Kitchen and Bar at Hotel Hotel next door for a coffee or a drink.

IMG_1887 IMG_1886

There’s so many gorgeous places to sit, it’s hard to choose.

IMG_1891  IMG_1890 IMG_1888  IMG_1899 IMG_1898 IMG_1904

Wine by the glass, coffee and cakes, are priced competitively and similar to what you would pay in far plainer settings.

IMG_1894 IMG_1895 IMG_1896

The Courgette Chocolate Cake $6 is large enough to share between two with coffees. It has a dry texture, that still works with coffee, but an excellent chocolate ganache.

IMG_1902 IMG_1901-0

There’s also a very good light lunch menu available 12-5pm that’s well priced and worth checking out.

IMG_1883

One of the very best things about Monster is, that being part of a hotel, its open very early and closes very late, every day!

IMG_1897IMG_1889IMG_1892 IMG_1893

Well worth trying!

On Red, Red Hill – the best view in town!

Standard

On Red has the best dining views in Canberra!

IMG_1995 IMG_1998

It is blessed by it’s privileged location in Canberra’s 50 year old Red Hill Lookout buildings, that also enjoys at the door free parking.

IMG_1996

The menu is conveniently designed so that you can choose 3-5 smaller dishes and build your own meal. This allows you to order to suit your appetite although it is priced to favour ‘upsizing’ at $70 for 3 courses, $82 for four courses and $94 for five courses.

There are plenty of beautifully presented and interesting dishes to choose from. However, some of the more impressive sounding dishes are actually outshone by some of those that sound inferior.

For example, for dessert, the strudel of apple & drunken sultana with honey & rosemary ice cream is absolutely delicious….

IMG_2021

…and and even better pick than the
warm chocolate tart with berries & honeycomb.

IMG_2020

Likewise the Moreton Bay Bug is not as good a choice as …

IMG_2006

… the Caramelised Onion Tart that has an exceptional Baba Ghanoush.

IMG_2003

So do take some risks and be pleasantly surprised.

Choices include, in order of recommendation:

John Dory with som tam salad & chilli jam

IMG_2017-0
Shredded confit duck leg with beetroot, sweet potato & kaleIMG_2012
Pork loin filled with chicken & pistachio with asparagus, apple & fondant potato

IMG_2011
Zucchini & caramelised onion tart w baba ghanoush & balsamic

IMG_2003
Lamb rump with quinoa, spiced carrot & herb jus

IMG_2018
Hunter Valley grass fed eye fillet with eschalot, spinach & mustard aioli

IMG_2015
Seared scallops with watermelon, bonito, kohlrabi cucumber and dashi

IMG_2008
Moreton bay bug with veal sweetbread, crustacean bisque & green pea

IMG_2006

The canapés are not as flavoursome as the dishes, but are well presented…

IMG_1999 IMG_2001

…and the bread is excellent!

IMG_2002

But it’s the setting that really impresses!

Debacale, Braddon – two for one pizzas

Standard

Debacle in Braddon, is always busy and popular – offering good casual outdoor eating in the warm weather, a nice range of specials and two for one pizzas on Monday and Tuesday evenings.

IMG_1122 IMG_1130

It’s also very helpfully open all day and every day.

While it’s not BYO, the wine is well priced (about $38 for a bottle)and you can get a 25% discount if you own a Canberra Entertainment Book.

IMG_2207

IMG_1127 IMG_1128 IMG_1123

The pizzas are $14 for a small, $21 for a medium or $30 for a large.

IMG_1126

For a group of four people two medium pizza is enough if you like to leave feeling comfortable (two large pizzas are just a bit too much).

You might also consider ordering a salad or two (and while there’s no discount for the Canberra Entertainment Book on the two for one pizza special, there is a discount for the salads or anything else you might order).

IMG_1124 IMG_1125

Do make sure you choose pizzas with plenty of tasty toppings.

The Mexicana…

IMG_2214

and the similar Carnivore are good choices.

The Bombay Chicken isn’t quite as tasty.

IMG_2218

If you have a large group, ask for the long table, especially in the cooler weather.

IMG_2152 IMG_2143

IMG_2151

The Traditional sour dough roll with butter $2 is very good and well worth the low price.

IMG_2136

IMG_2148

IMG_2147

And then there is Chef Jojy’s signature dish, freshly cooked Atlantic Lobster served with lobster cream sauce, sprinkled with grated cheese and béarnaise sauce….

IMG_2149
…. it comes with an entrée of Lobster bisque and bread roll for $42.90.

IMG_2146

Only available on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

The desserts are well priced at $12.50 but not as good as the other courses.
The best is the black sesame seed icecream that comes with the mango mousse layered vanilla sponge and coconut espuma…

IMG_2156
…The lemon and lime cheesecake is not quite sweet enough…

IMG_2158
…The pistachio chocolate terrine is very, very rich.

IMG_2159

..and there’s an Adffogato – Vanilla ice cream, shot of co ee, Tuaca liquor.

IMG_2157-1

Perhaps the best choice for dessert would be the trio of house made ice-cream.

Wine by the glass starts at around $9..

IMG_2138

…and there’s a bar menu.

IMG_2139 IMG_2145

The views of the lake are lovely in the day time…however generally the decor has a club feel as you would expect.

Urban Pantry, the Lawns, Manuka – gorgeous spot on a warm summer evening

Standard

Warmer days in Canberra mean wonderful opportunities to dine outdoors in the evening and it’s hard to beat Urban Pantry Manuka, for an excellent mid-range spot.

IMG_1865IMG_1867

Ask to sit outside at one of the tables overlooking the lawns and if you’re lucky there may even be some great live music that completes the relaxed, romantic mood.

IMG_1876

Offering BYO wine at $5.50 per person and 2 meals for the price of 1, for Canberra Entertainment Book holders, it’s very good value.

IMG_1866

There’s a new menu that’s well worth a look.

IMG_1869IMG_1868

IMG_1870

IMG_1871

The dishes on offer are interesting, a little different, beautifully presented and delicious.

The Grilled Haloumi with smoked tomatoes, pickled zucchini, wild roquette, chickpea puree, Labneh and zaster $21, looks like a good choice if you’d like a light meal or are getting a few dishes to share.

For something more substantial the Pan Fried John Dory $34 with baby clams. white wine, cauliflower 3 ways (steamed, roasted and pureed), salsa verde, roasted hazelnuts – is really very good. The combination of different textures and flavours is well chosen. The crisp fish and the hazelnuts are especially good, as is the cauliflower puree.

IMG_1875

For a more traditional choice the Steak Frites $34, with grained eye fillet, broccolini, cultured herb butter, roasted organic garlic,  and french fries is also good. There’s a choice of two sauces, but the pepper sauce is excellent!

IMG_1874
