Top spots in Hobart

I’ve just got back from the Dietitians’ Conference in Hobart and dropped in on lots of the spots I loved last visit, ticked off some on my wishlist and tried a few newbies.

Plus this time I got to the Salamanca Markets and tasted the wonderful Salmon Sausage Foccacia from Silver Hill Fisch.

It was back for dinner at Tassies top restaurant Franklin….

Raw silver perch with soured cream, black daikon and horseradish $18

On the wishlist … lunch at Frank on the waterfront at the bottom of the Tasplan building..

Kingfish $21 with nuoc mau, peanut, smoked cucumber and beetroot $16 with smoked sheep’s curd, dashi reduction, toasted sesame

Return visits to Jackman and McRoss on that gorgeous street…

….and also back to Pilgrim  – still not so great for food
I couldn’t eat this Bolivian Quinoa Bowl $14 sadly

A new one was Silver Hill Fisch at the Saturday Salamanca Markets. This salmon sausage in a focaccia with coriander and  rocket $8 was the Dietitians’ hot tip. Here, the lovely 22 year old owner and manager Maja serves just the one special, much sort after specialty.

Overall the fish dishes were the loveliest.

And the best… still Franklin for the vibe and innovation, Glass House for the view and service, Frank for food, but Silver Hill Fisch for fun and inspiration!

A good place for dinner in Hobart CBD is the new and popular Franklin.

The menu is designed for sharing and with a range of smaller and larger dishes that change daily.

It’s a very good idea to be adventurous as the dishes that sound the least appealing may well be the best like the…

grains cooked with braised nettles, southern calamari and toasted saltbush $24

…and the grilled lettuce side dish with wakame.

Also on the menu has been a Grilled Blue eye cod with parsnip, dried oyster and blue kale $32

Lamb rump with bread sauce, red Russian kale and anchovy $38

and a Cider poached pork neck $48


Also good to try would be Frank, closer to the water.

Small-fry, Hobart

This tiny but cute eatery on Bathurst street near Hobart’s CBD is gorgeous and a real experience for a coffee, all day breakfast or quick lunch.

Open seven days, the menu is short but good!

The crumbed haloumi slider with celeriac remoulade and the shaved brisket with rava dressing slider are both excellent….

…..as are the bakery treats like the Chelsea roll with cherry sauce.

Daci & Daci Bakers, Hobart

Daci & Daci on Murray Street, are easy to find near Salamanca Place……

……have an extensive range, good prices…..

…..and a pleasant atmosphere.

As “bakers of bread, Viennosserie, cakes, patisserie, provisions and savouries and European Coffee House” they are a convenient choice for brunch, lunch or coffee.

Choices include brekfast dishes (the fruit toast is gorgeous, huge and more than enough for two people, a true bargain at $7)….

…cakes and pastries…

…salads…

And much more.

It’s hard though to resist the huge meringues…

Jam Jar Lounge, Battery Point, Hobart

Jam Jar Lounge is a very cute spot…

….on Hampden Road, Battery Point, Hobart.

  

While its menu may not be as good as Jackman and McRoss for brunch….

it’s a great spot for a coffee….

…..and worth trying for lunch or dinner, close to the Hobart CBD.

But mainly, it’s just got so many gorgeous spots to sit.

T 42‘s  best assets are its easy walking distance from Hobart’s CBD….


…..and its lovely view from its Elizabeth Street Pier location.
